You lower down, lose control, collapse, try again, and wonder why it feels impossible to push back up. Here’s why: a handstand push up isn’t just about pressing strength. You need three main pieces working together, shoulder power, pushing stability, and body alignment. Your shoulders create the force, your stability muscles stop you from tipping, and your alignment keeps your body stacked so the press feels straight instead of shaky. If one piece is missing, you flare your elbows, lose balance, overarch, or fall out of the handstand. But when you train these areas the right way, everything gets smoother. You lower with control.

The L-sit handstand press, or pike press, can be broken down into different phases to make it easier to learn. Instead of trying to do it all at once, you can train each section separately and then put everything together. 1. Compression Strength – The more you compress, the easier it is to pass your legs through. This part is all about building strength in your L-sit position by bringing your upper and lower body as close as possible. 2. Shoulder Strength and Leg Pathway – Strong, open shoulders are key for getting your legs through. A great way to train this is by using a chair—place one foot up, then the other, and practice moving your legs through. If you can’t pass them yet, just focus on touching your arms and increasing compression. 3. Final Compression and Shoulder Stability – When your feet pass through, your shoulders need to stay strong and open. If they collapse, you won’t be able to complete the press. This phase helps you build endurance and control for a smooth transition. Train each part separately, and when you put them all together, the L-sit press will feel much easier.
