PRStabilizing Soft Subgrades with GEOWEB Geocells: Manitowoc Harbor Project
This video shows the GEOWEB geocells being infilled as part of our collaborative project with the US Army Corps of Engineers at the Manitowoc Harbor Containment Disposal Facility. The GEOWEB Load Support System, chosen for its superior load distribution, revolutionizes construction in environmentally sensitive areas.
About the Project:
Engineers designed a 36,000-square-foot haul road over weak soil using the GEOWEB system. Due to the low subgrade strength and anticipated heavy traffic patterns, a dual layer of GEOWEB GW30V6 (6-inch-deep) reinforcement was required. An enhanced woven geotextile was installed on the prepared subgrade to provide separation and filtration. The GEOWEB system was infilled with low-maintenance crushed aggregate.
A low-impact solution was also necessary, given the site’s location in an environmentally sensitive area. The GEOWEB system performs as a load support structure and provides an additional benefit in terms of on-site stormwater detention/retention with aggregate infill material. The latter use can help reduce or eliminate requirements and costs for on-site stormwater containment systems.
Since the installation, the GEOWEB haul road has withstood repeated heavy traffic and heavy rain events. Crews have operated 70-ton haul trucks and heavy-tracked equipment over the GEOWEB system with no issues.
Project lead Mark Olsen from Roen Salvage Company says, “We’ve been running 120-ton haul trucks and excavators over it with absolutely no problems at all. We’ve had heavy rainstorms—2 to 3-inch rainstorms—and it doesn’t affect it at all. It’s been a really good product. Putting it down and prepping for the road is very easy.”

Pouring concrete straight from the truck chute can be efficient, but it comes with important precautions to ensure quality and safety.
1. Accessibility & Site Preparation:
Ensure the truck can safely access the pour location without damaging the subgrade. The surface should be compacted, clean, and free of debris.
2. Chute Positioning:
Proper chute alignment is critical. The concrete should flow directly into the formwork without causing segregation. Avoid discharging from excessive heights, which can separate aggregates and weaken the mix.
3. Slump Control:
Communicate with the driver about the required slump. A mix that’s too wet or too dry can compromise strength and finish. Slump adjustments should be made before pouring starts.
4. Rate of Discharge:
Avoid pouring too fast. A controlled flow helps prevent overfilling forms, cold joints, and uneven distribution.
5. Vibration & Compaction:
Even when pouring from the chute, always vibrate the concrete properly to eliminate air pockets and ensure full contact with the formwork and reinforcement.
6. Worker Safety:
Stay alert around moving equipment. Use personal protective equipment (PPE) and maintain clear communication with the truck operator.
7. Weather Conditions:
Account for temperature, wind, and sun. Hot or cold weather can affect setting time and surface finish.
