Substack is back in the news again for the wrong reason: this time, the platform sent a push notification to a neo-Nazi newsletter featuring a swastika logo. Here’s Substack cofounder and CEO Chris Best on Decoder two years ago struggling to answer a question about moderating hate speech. What do you think? Check out the full episode wherever you get your podcasts. #substack #moderation #tech

How I decide what to charge for on Substack as someone who makes an extra $17,000 dollars a year writing on the platform in 9 months. For me I think about it like this: Free subscribers I want them to read my work and do one or two things: 1. Save the post 2. Share the post. I want them to see real value and refer back to it later. I want it to be worthwhile opening. For paid subscribers I want them to think: wow I have an unfair advantage now because I have been given so much detail in this post and it is so useful I can immediately apply it to my life and business. #contentcreation #substack #business

hold my ring light… This industry is new and there is very little infrastructure or support and yet we still signed up to building the plane while flying it through a Category 5 fucking hurricane! Are there problems? Absolutely! But I don’t think they are as outsized as articles like this one from @bulwarkonline would have you believe, and they also don’t give enough credit to the folks doing the work, often for pennies. And, let’s not forget right-leaning social media and political creators massively influenced how we got here in the first place. So, I guess sorry some of us are trying to help?! Sorry we signed up to get hate-filled DMs, threats to our lives, and to work insane hours tied to an administration that is addicted to chaos and horror?! But it’s kinda embarrassing to be shitting on the folks creating real impact with $0 budgets while you sit in your fancy offices yapping into your high-end equipment. Ok bye 👋!

I started a series a couple weeks ago called Defunding Fascism, where we walk you through the process of moving away from fascism-supporting companies and putting our money elsewhere. And through that series, I came across the amazing Alexa Speed, creator of @cutoffthespigot. In a Substack Live, we discussed our collective efforts to stop funding companies that hate democracy and the frustration many people are feeling that our money could unwittingly end up funding lobbying, political influence, and systems we fundamentally disagree with. But we still have a choice—whether it’s switching services, repairing instead of replacing, or slowly migrating toward companies that align more with our values. So go check out the full conversation at the link in bio. And follow me, Baratunde and Life with Machines, for our series on Defunding Fascism. We recently made a whole guide for new subscribers to our Substack lifewithmachines.media on how to move all your data out of ChatGPT and no longer give our money to Scam Altman. And let me know in the comments: What’s the one company, service, or platform you feel most stuck on leaving right now? Let’s support our collective efforts and try to help each other out. #AI #responsibleAI #aiethics

"Nobody" Supports Dave Smith Another day, another @sostalksmoney self-own. After the supposed "debate" with @theproblemdavesmith Adam goes on @pbd.podcast and tells the audience how he thinks he did fine, he doesn't read the comments and it doesn't even matter because nobody supports Dave. The laughable lack of self-awareness is so perplexing I can't wrap my head around it. I watched this supposed 'debate' and it was anything but a debate. No positions, no meaningful argument, no points whatsoever. Your debate position can't be "you lost in a debate to this other man" and then spend the rest of the conversation talking over him and squealing your talking points without any meaningful defense or discussion. It's OK to disagree with Dave, but to pretend that nobody cares about his opinion or supports him when he objectively destroys you in every objective measurement is just beyond reality. This seems to be the go-to retort these days and it's as weak as it is nonsensical. Disagree, debate the points and the audience response is the temperature check. It's so simple.

Trust in mass media just hit 28%, the lowest in the poll's half-century history. The usual explanation is that trust evaporated. It didn't. It migrated into rooms most people don't know exist. To see where it went, you need a concept: narrative infrastructure. We don't reason from first principles each morning. We think with frameworks we absorbed from somewhere. Power belongs to whoever controls what people think with, not what they think about. For most of the twentieth century, a few large organizations controlled that supply chain. Three networks, a handful of papers, shared gatekeepers. That broke. It fragmented into a thousand small workshops. This has happened before. Edward Lloyd posted a shipping list on his coffeehouse wall in 1692; it became Lloyd's of London. Jonathan's Coffee House posted stock prices; that list became the London Stock Exchange. King Charles II tried banning coffeehouses in 1675. Public outcry reversed it in eleven days. Today's equivalents run the same operating system. In 2011, seventeen people in an online community voted on a name: "effective altruism." It mobilized tens of billions of dollars. The cypherpunk mailing list (around 700 subscribers) debated digital cash for 16 years before Satoshi assembled their failed experiments into Bitcoin. Each time, the narrative infrastructure was built before the moment. A small room developed the vocabulary. Millions ended up thinking with concepts they'd never seen two years prior. These rooms don't compete with mainstream media for audience. They compete upstream: for the frameworks people use to interpret everything else. Whoever builds the frameworks controls the conversation before it starts. That's where influence is moving. Not toward better broadcasts, but toward 15-person Discords and Substack clusters building the vocabulary everyone else will borrow. If you're not in those rooms while the vocabulary is still wet, you'll spend the next decade thinking with tools someone else designed.
