SAA 50-person startup called Substrate just raised $100 million to replace ASML’s $400 million EUV lithography machines — the only machines in the world that can make advanced AI chips. They’re using X-ray lithography instead of ultraviolet, claiming they can cut costs by 10X. But they’re not stopping there: Substrate wants to replace TSMC too, building both the machines and the fabs. If they succeed, AI chip manufacturing comes back to American soil. But X-ray lithography has failed before, and the founder has zero chipmaking experience. Still — they’re not alone. Other startups and even Johns Hopkins are racing toward the same goal. And China is reverse-engineering EUV with a working prototype. The real AI race isn’t about models. It’s about who controls the hardware.
