அத்திரி முனிவரும், அவருடைய இல்லத்தரசியும் கற்புக்கரசியுமான அனுசுயாவும் ஞானாரண்யம் எனும் பழம்பெயர்பெற்ற சுசீந்திரத்தில் தவம் செய்தனர். இந்நிலையில், அத்திரி முனிவர் இமயமலைக்குச் சென்றார். அப்போது சிவபெருமான், விஷ்ணு, பிரம்மா ஆகிய முப்பெருங்கடவுள்களும் அனுசுயாவின் கற்பை சோதிக்க எண்ணி பிராமணர் வேடம் அணிந்து, அவருடைய ஆசிரமத்திற்கு வந்து உணவு தருமாறு வேண்டினர். அனுசுயாவும் உணவு படைக்கத் தொடங்கினார். அப்போது மூவரும், ”ஆடை அணிந்த ஒருவரால் உணவு பரிமாறப்படுமாயின் உணவு உண்ண ஆகாது” என்று கூறினர். இதைக் கேட்டு திடுக்கிட்ட அனுசுயாதேவி, தன் கணவர் திருவடி கழுவிய நீரை மூவர் மீதும் தெளித்தார். அவர்கள் மூவரும் பச்சிளங்குழந்தைகளாக மாறினர். பின்பு அந்தப் பச்சிளங்குழந்தைகளுக்கு உணவூட்டி, தொட்டிலிட்டு, தாலாட்டித் தூங்கச் செய்தாள். தங்கள் கணவர்கள் பச்சிளங்குழந்தையாக மாற்றப்பட்டதை அறிந்த மூவரின் தேவியரும் அங்கு வந்து அனுசுயாவிடம், தங்கள் கணவர்களை பழைய உருவிற்கு மாற்றித் தர வேண்டினர். தேவியர்கள் வேண்டுகோளுக்கிணங்கிய அனுசுயா முப்பெரும் கடவுளுக்கும் பழைய உருவைக் கொடுத்தாள். அப்போது திரும்பி வந்த அத்திரி முனிவரும் அனுசூயாவோடு சேர்ந்து, மும்மூர்த்திகளின் காட்சியைப் பெற்றார். இந்நிகழ்ச்சியை நினைவூட்டவே சுசீந்திரம் கோவில் கட்டப்பட்டுள்ளது என்கிறது இதன் தல வரலாறு.
அத்திரி முனிவரும், அனுசுயாவும் இங்குள்ள தல விருட்சமான கொன்றை மரத்தினடியில் நின்று வேண்ட மும்மூர்த்திகளும் காட்சி கொடுத்தனர். இதைக் குறிக்கும் விதமாக மும்மூர்த்திகளும் ஒரு முகமாய் தாணுமாலயன் என்ற பெயரில் இங்கு எழுந்தருளியுள்ளனர். சிவன் (தாணு), விஷ்ணு (மால்), பிரம்மா (அயன்) ஆகிய முப்பெருங்கடவுள்களும் சேர்ந்துள்ள இத்தல மூர்த்தி தாணுமாலயன் என அழைக்கப்படுகிறார்.
