Alrededor del mediodía del viernes 2 de mayo, a pesar de un cielo mayormente nublado y una fuerte turbulencia atmosférica, decidí intentar capturar una imagen de alta resolución de la enorme mancha solar AR4079. Tras varios intentos, encontré unos pocos segundos de estabilidad que me permitieron registrar esta imagen. Utilicé un telescopio newtoniano de 10 pulgadas con un espejo primario sin recubrimiento, construido por un amigo en la ciudad de Rafaela, Argentina. La imagen revela el corazón oscuro de AR4079, la mancha solar más grande de 2025 hasta ahora. Esta estructura colosal se extiende unos 140.000 kilómetros a través del disco solar, cubriendo un área equivalente al 50% de la legendaria mancha solar de 1859, que desencadenó el histórico Evento Carrington. En esta fotografía se distinguen claramente dos núcleos negros —cada uno lo suficientemente grande como para tragar la Tierra— rodeados de delicadas fibrillas solares de hasta 20.000 kilómetros de longitud. Estas estructuras filamentosas siguen las líneas del campo magnético, canalizando plasma caliente hacia dentro y fuera de la mancha solar.
