At first glance… you’d swear this was a hummingbird 👀 But it’s actually a hummingbird moth — one of the coolest little visitors to show up in the garden. The way it hovers, moves, and feeds looks almost identical… nature is wild like that. These are the kind of slow, simple moments I never get tired of watching 🤍 If you’ve ever seen one before, you know exactly what I mean. Have you ever spotted one in real life? #backyardwildlife #naturelovers #hummingbirdmoth #kentuckylife

Some people call these flying shrimp fairies and honestly we can't argue with that 😂 This is a Hummingbird Clearwing Moth and we had our first one of the season show up on our variegated lemon tree this morning 🤩 Had to slow this video way down because these things are very fast when they want to be. These are one of Mandi's absolute favorite bugs and seeing one this early in the season is such a good sign for our pollinator garden this year. Here are some cool facts about them. They're part of the Sphinx moth family and their genus name, Hemaris, comes from the Greek word "hemera" meaning day, because unlike most moths, they're active during the daytime. They can hover in mid air, fly backwards, and their wings beat up to 80 times per second. They use a long proboscis, sometimes twice their body length, to sip nectar while hovering, just like a hummingbird. Their resemblance to hummingbirds isn't a coincidence either. It's actually a phenomenon called convergent evolution, where two unrelated species develop similar traits to thrive in the same environment. When they first emerge from their cocoon, their wings are actually covered in dark reddish scales. As they begin to fly, those scales fall off, leaving behind the clear, transparent wings they're known for. They're also important pollinators, especially for tubular flowers that other pollinators can't always reach. As for symbolism, the hummingbird moth is widely associated with transformation, adaptability, and new beginnings. Their entire life cycle, from caterpillar to cocoon to this incredible flying creature, mirrors the idea of personal growth and embracing change. In many cultures they're seen as a sign that positive changes are on the way. Given where we are right now with our business and getting back into content creation, we'll take that sign 💚 #HummingbirdMoth #ClearwingMoth #PollinatorGarden #BackyardGarden #Moths
