EP💧 A groundwater treatment system at a #superfund site in Doylestown, Pennsylvania is now complete — helping to ensure the protection of affected communities and moving these sites closer in the direction of potential redevelopment.
From the mid-1960s to the late 1970s, Chem Fab, Inc. operated an electroplating and metal etching facility which stored and disposed of processing chemicals on-site.
Groundwater underlying the Site is contaminated with metals, volatile organic compounds, and per-and polyfluorinated substances (PFAS).
$2.9 million from the historic Bipartisan Infrastructure Law expedited the cleanup.

EPWe found that 56% of the EPA’s federal facility Superfund Five-Year Reviews, or FYRs, were not publicly available through the Superfund FYR website search tool, and about 15% of nonfederal facility Superfund FYRs were similarly unavailable. Although some of the missing FYRs were available on other site pages, inconsistent locations can impede public access and impair governmental transparency.

EP🏭 @epa_northeastandcaribbean is tackling over a century of industrial contamination in three major segments for the cleanup at the Gowanus Canal Superfund Site.
✅ EPA recently completed dredging and capping in the first part - the upper segment of the canal.
🚧 Two massive tanks (8-million-gallon and 4-million-gallon) are under construction to control Combined Sewer Overflows (CSOs), preventing contamination from being discharged into the canal.
🔨 Right now, the EPA is working on the second part - the middle section of the canal - with new bulkhead walls being built to support the dredging process, which will continue into 2026.
We are doing the work needed to begin work on the third and final section.

EPCertain contaminants—like lead and arsenic—that can pose risks to human health occur naturally in the environment. These same kinds of contaminants can also be deposited by industrial activities, like mining and smelting. So, how can you tell the difference between what’s naturally occurring and what’s the result of industrial pollution? One way is through a background study. During this kind of study, Superfund site teams find an area close enough to a Superfund site to have a similar geologic profile but far enough away not to have been affected by industrial activities. Comparing “background” data from soil in these areas to soils data from an affected site helps EPA understand how much contamination exists due to industrial activities. This, in turn, helps site teams determine an appropriate cleanup level for an affected site.
In July, thanks to volunteers and neighbors in the Helena Valley, EPA conducted a background study to help determine how much lead occurs naturally in soils in the area. This data will be compared to soils data from East Helena, where some properties remain contaminated by lead and arsenic due to more than 100 years of a former smelting operation.
