Seen these yet? (Not an ad, I just think these are cool!). Swiftblocker (the Michigan company who brought you the tool that makes an entire tray of soil blocks at one time) debuted their mini version last week! This one is designed to fit into those deli or meat trays that would otherwise be discarded, Tupperware lids, etc., so it’s great for upcycling anything into a seed starting tray. It’s great for folks who have mobility issues with their hands and can’t use the regular handheld blocker, which can be hard for those with arthritic fingers. They’re super sturdy and @swiftblocker MANUFACTURES IN THE USA, crazy, I know. My full review is hitting YouTube today; for now there’s a link in my bio to check them out! Finally getting around to trying out my new Swiftblocker soil blocking system. I was excited to try this and as you’ll see, I’m happy with the results! 👍👍 My soil blocking recipe was equal parts Pro-Mix BX, Pittmoss Plentiful, and Soil3 Veggie Mix, plus about 1/2 part TerraThrive worm castings. The total peat in this recipe is less than 30% and I like that part. The Pittmoss Plentiful is just a paper product with a bit of organic nitrogen, and the Soil3 Veggie Mix is a combination of composted straw, grass clippings, and cow manure and a small amount of wood fines for drainage. And the worm castings bring in some unique benefits with the soil biology. 🪱🌱🌱🌱 I think we have a winning combination here with the equipment and the soil recipe. 🙌

Thinking about getting a @swiftblocker? A few weeks ago I reached out to Dan and Ashley about their 128-blocker. Chris and I were in the midst of researching stand up soil blockers that would give us blocks in between our micro and 2-inch - but I knew that the 35-cell stand up wasn’t going to work for our set up and I could just imaging all the trays snapping 🫠 We wanted this size for a couple reasons: first, starting our larger perennial seeds like lupines and echinops. They didn’t fit in the micro, and the large blocks took up too much space at a time of year when space is limited. Second, we wanted something to start our larger, later season seeds in (like zinnias, cosmos, or marigolds) that we could keep them in without bumping up. The micros again were too small and the large blocks wasted soil and space. They sent us the Swift Blocker 128 to take for a rip. First impression? This thing is heavy. Seriously, was not expecting the weight. And it’s stainless steel - so it’s going to last forever. This unit is definitely for a larger grower, not necessarily a home grower (but you do you). That said, they have their Nano Series which I think is perfect for the home gardener. We’re really excited to add this to our list of recommended growing products, and we’ll keep sharing with you how we use it and if it’s working like we hoped it would! 🌱🌱🌱 PS: they have a Canadian distributor based out of SK! I was able to use my new dahlia blocker from @swiftblocker today. I think I will be able to make them faster now that I made a few (if you made it through the entire video I’m impressed!) I’m excited about this large soil blocker for a few reasons: 1. A key component of my strategy to have virus-free dahlias is to only grow from virus tested plants - this means I make lots and lots of cuttings in order to fill my field to keep testing costs down. 2. Soil blocks prevent plants from getting root bound. I am hoping this leads to straighter tubers when grown from cuttings, making dividing next winter easier. 3. Reduction in single use plastics from not using plastic pots. 4. The blocker is from a Michigan small business. The cuttings are in the 1020 mesh deep extra strength tray from @bootstrapfarmer. I have it right in my potting tray so that the excess water can drain as I go, and then once all eight blocks were made I placed the mesh tray into the tray without the holes to go on the shelf. I will probably throw one or two cuttings into pots just to be able to see the difference at the end of the year. The dibbles perfectly fit the 1.5in rock wool cubes I’m using for rooting, and after I popped the cuttings in I topped them off with some worm castings and mycorrhizae. #carpedahlia #soilblocks #dahliablocker #dahliacuttings #dahlias #growingdahliasfromcuttings

There are a lot of examples of soil blocking out there, a lot of which use cafeteria style base trays. I use a different approach with mesh 1020 trays because I don’t want the roots of my seedlings to sit on “wet feet” and I want the ease of fast watering. I found these great mesh 1020 trays on Amazon and have been planting in them ever since. The @swiftblocker 200 mini blocker makes a full tray of mini soil blocks in under 3 min! That saves so much time and wear and tear on my hands pressing out 10 typical mini blocks per plate. Efficiency is everything in spring seed starting and although this is a larger upfront investment, it’s totally worth it to me to speed up processes! The best part is that I just life the mesh tray out of the 1020 tray, sit in a tray of water for a few min, drain and return it to its place under the lights- super efficient, fast and better for the roots not to sit in standing water for too long! The VOLUME of soil blocks that I can make in a short amount of time is one of the best investments that I’ve EVER made for my flower farm! In previous seasons, I used a 20 block hand press soil blocker—- I’d spend an entire evening pressing out 1,000 soil blocks, and then I’d be too tired to even seed those trays. Last week, I was able to press out 20 trays (4,000 soil blocks) in an hour!!! That still blows my mind!!!
