People always ask if the baby is safe playing on the ledge or the steps. That’s actually the whole point in the beginning. Can the child play on the steps, fall in, turn around, and get back to where they can stand? Once they can do that, then you stretch the distance. Then later come strokes and skills. That’s the safest progression because the child understands their exact abilities every single time they are in the water. No guessing. No false confidence. When this early window gets missed, things don’t just slow down — you actually start moving backwards. Now we’re not building skills, we’re undoing fear, bad habits, and upright swimming patterns. This is not an exaggeration. This is almost every 4-year-old I start with. We’re not building forward from zero — I’m trying to get them back to square one first. And still, despite me saying this constantly, kids go right back into puddle jumpers between lessons. That is one of the biggest reasons kids struggle to learn to swim. Early environment matters more than anything. Learn How👉 Start Now! Comment Prepare2Swim for more info!

These are the activities, and opportunities you need to provide your children to make them water safe, as soon as possible. Whether it’s from scratch with an infant, fearful toddler, or even YOU YOURSELF. All of these steps develop first from being able to put face in the water on purpose, so of course start there. But once that is accomplished, this is what you work on. Not encouraging kicks, or bubbles. Not catching them jumping in water, not using a flotation device. Just good old fashion highly supervised and minimally supported real swims. Controlled swims. Always TALKING ABOUT what is safe. Oh, and of course this means you’re in the water. And be on the same page with your lady friend. When one parent is in the game, and the other is tik toking and criticizing from the sidelines, that’s a bad formula that confuses the child. This is both people learning what NEEDS to be done, and getting it done together. Let our course guide you @prepare2swim If you want to learn more comment Prepare2Swim! Seated jump. How do you get here? Well it starts with becoming a team with your babe. And that’s happens from starting small in the tub. Getting babe to understand the verbal cue, and anticipate water. Once cup pours are solidified, then forward front submersions. If this is solid, child is non reactive to water, child has gone under for weeks, with NO issues, they will be ready for a seated jump. You must get their attention. You must initiate the verbal cue, and be confident guiding them into the water and directing them back to safety. Celebrate the wins! Don’t rush to this step. Child should have substantial opportunities to voluntarily put their face in water before starting this skill. No matter what age your child is, if you’re going to have them jump in, they must be comfortable with being submerged under the water! And if your in, your child can start heading in the right direction…. As long as no puddle jumper is involved. Bc if thats the case then it will only make early water safety more complicated. I’m not just making that up- ask any private instructor. Ok still with me? Parents- when you take the early steps to learn how to teach a child to swim, you can make it happen. And WAY to many people dont even think the learning to swim process even starts until a child is like 4 years old. That is not the case Actually every single time you get your child wet, from a few months old, to regular toddler shower/bath time shapes your childs ability to learn how to swim early. Not a Drill. This is true Their relationship and ability to relax entirely in water, with your support, is how kids learn to swim early. Waiting until even a little fear builds, minor tension– then the child goes to a stranger at a new place, all this pressure… no…. The way to get your child swimming is by developing a trust with your babe. Or rebuilding the trust with your babe. You are the best candidate with the most access. Ive been doing this for a long time- and ive seen plenty of 3 year olds that cant glide, completely turn a corner from work in the tub. It may just take a little reacclimation. Your not alone.. But i cant stress this enough– the foundation must be built.. And that is purposeful face in submersions.. ANY age. Before learning can start. Oh- I also have courses @prepare2swim that are helping people all over the world work with children in all stages. Once you see the bigger picture- and the progression to get through it, you will have the confidence to get your child swimming.

Your child can handle way more than you think. When a child has already built real water confidence, part of my job as an instructor is to meet them at that level. That means playing hard. Being unpredictable. Challenging them in ways that push their skills because that is exactly what builds the next layer of confidence. Rough play in the water is not reckless. In the right hands it is intentional, controlled and one of the most valuable things we can do for a swimmer who is ready for it. When you are playing hard in the water, sometimes things happen. A child might inhale water. Their body might react. It is not the goal and we do everything to prevent it. But if it does happen, how you handle that moment tells your child everything they need to know about how to react. Stay calm. Read the child. Talk to them. Make sure they are okay. And then move forward. Have questions about how your child is progressing in the water or what real water confidence looks like? Drop them in the comments. I am always happy to help.

Last week we saw this guy keep backing up on his kid? Real bad. Aggressively. Scary situation for the child. A ton of well intentioned parents, are also guilty of this. And a whole bunch of other weird stuff. If your kid is not swimming right now, any age, this is what you need to be doing. Yes we suggest this process begins at 2 months old, so all this is complete by 2.5. BUT. If your 2-3-4-8 year old isn’t swimming safely yet, this is what you need to be doing as well. This is what creates a safe swimmer. My guide @prepare2swim has helped thousands to these milestones. As well as the rest of the progressions. You just have to be able to have your kid get wet. There is no one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to teaching kids how to swim. Every child moves differently. Every child learns differently. And every child develops skills on their own timeline. Yes, there are certain swim skills that are non-negotiable — things like putting your face in the water, learning to float, developing a horizontal body position, and eventually learning proper stroke technique. But that doesn’t mean every swimmer will learn those skills in the same order. Some kids naturally pick up freestyle first. Others feel more comfortable on their back. Some coordinate dolphin kick faster than flutter kick. Others move better with breaststroke. Every swimmer’s body is different. Some swim programs follow very strict level progressions. While that structure can work well in many group lesson settings, it can also mean that some children get stuck repeating the same level because they are missing one specific skill — even though they may be capable of learning many other important skills in the water. I also understand that large swim schools often need to follow a very standardized system to manage large groups of students. However, sometimes that structure can unintentionally keep swimmers repeating the same level for long periods of time. In my private lessons, I focus on adapting to the swimmer in front of me. We continue working on the skills that are challenging, but we also build other abilities that help children become stronger, more coordinated, and more confident in the water. Because the goal isn’t perfection. The goal is creating safer, capable, competent, confident, and strong swimmers who love the water. #watersafety#swiminstructor#swimlessons

It’s okay if your toddler uses a puddle jumper 💦 Safety and confidence matter—but so does learning real swimming skills! The key is balance 👇 ✔️ Let them enjoy the water with a puddle jumper ✔️ AND make sure they’re also getting practice without it Why? Because puddle jumpers can create a false sense of buoyancy and body position. Practicing without one helps your child learn how to truly float, kick, and move safely in the water 🏊‍♀️ Progress over perfection. Confidence over fear. Comment CONFIDENCE and I'll send you your FREE water confidence guide! Swimming starts at home not when they start swimming lessons!! 💎 Before I say anything else can we all just notice that every.single.time she goes under or we put water on her head we use the cue '1,2,3 under' !! (I purposely didn't put music over the top so you could hear it) If I've said it once I've said it 100 times how to teach submerging with your bub is to use a cue from the moment they are born!! If your kids have classes with me you'll hear me say it 10-20 times in a lesson, every time I put water on their head to when they do a jump to me! I don't say it because I like the sound of my voice 🤪 I say it because it works!! If your (little) kids have lessons with me you'll notice I use a noodle in every single lesson!! Noodles teach balance, coordination and confidence (I've done a whole post on the benefits of noodles go back and have a look)! Parents in my parent child classes comment below, have we been using noodles? Even for your 6 month old? This is why! I have 1 year olds who are already balancing and almost swimming independently on a noodle, they will never need floaties if they can use a noodle! Swimming lessons is 30 min once a week, the teacher can only do so much with them, the rest is up to you and what you do at home! First, I want to say this: every swimmer is different. Some students do great learning bubbles first, while others respond better to learning breath holding first. As swim instructors, our job is to adapt our teaching to the individual swimmer in front of us. For probably the first 13 years of teaching, I followed a very rigid progression starting with mouth bubbles, nose bubbles, and full submerge, then moving into floating, kicking, and strokes. That’s the way I was originally taught. But over the last 3 years, I’ve shifted my approach and often start with breath holding first. When swimmers blow bubbles underwater, they are also exhaling the air that helps keep them buoyant. Many beginners will sink or feel like they’re sinking faster when blowing bubbles, which can make floating and early skills more difficult. It also reduces their breath-holding capacity, which is already limited for young swimmers and beginners. Another challenge is that many kids are still learning how to blow their nose outside the water. Coordinating that while putting their face underwater and blowing bubbles can be tough at the beginning. Teaching breath holding first has often helped swimmers get comfortable going underwater much faster. I absolutely still teach bubbles — they’re important for swim technique. But I often introduce them later, once a swimmer can: • Hold their breath 5–10 seconds • Float on their stomach and back • Jump in and return to the wall • Kick and move a short distance • Perform a rollover float or swim-float-swim At that point, bubbles become important for stroke technique and breathing patterns. There isn’t one right answer — every swimmer is different. Swim instructors — what do you teach first? Bubbles or breath holding? 👇 #watersafety#swimlessons#swiminstructor

And i really dont care how fast they swim. My goal with all people I have ever worked with, and this is starting at months old, or 75 years old…. .what can I do with you, to make sure you can save your own life in the water. Different starting points require different skills sets… but when you can mold it from scratch, IE- a two year old child that can put their face underwater, the key is always TICKLE T SNAP on the back, and chin down clean glides. Never kicks- dont teach bubble blowing- learn a few other tricks that have been up my sleeve for the last 25 years, and you will be able to get your own child swimming.
