SNSyllable division isn’t everything… but it is something. 🧠
I see it as a helpful decoding tool, especially with simple two-syllable words like basket, rabbit, or plastic — words that are often just one morpheme. It gives students a way to spot vowel patterns, chunk words, and build confidence with longer words.
That said, I’m not rigid about syllable division. I always remind students to look for common morphemes first. If we see unhappy, we spot the prefix un- before we start dividing anything.
Once students get beyond the basics, I lean more heavily into morphology—because structure and meaning matter more than perfectly slicing a word into syllables.
Still, I love using activities like this one to help students practice VCCV words, build fluency, and get that all-important vowel awareness. It’s one more tool in the toolkit!
