Does systemic racism exist? I’ve been counting down my top videos of 2025! Coming in number 3, here’s an important example of systemic racism in medicine that’s lasted over 200 years. A myth spoken by Thomas Jefferson and amplified by doctors like Samuel Cartwright was built into the very machines we still use today, changing how lung health was measured for Black and Asian patients until just a few years ago. Let me know if you learned this from me before or if it’s new! 👇🏾

What are your thoughts on this? Structure and processes are essential for stability, but they can unintentionally constrain innovation. When creative thinkers are buried too low in an organization, their ideas are filtered, slowed, or reshaped to fit existing frameworks. Over time, that pressure can dull originality. Creativity doesn’t thrive under excessive control; it thrives with autonomy and strategic influence. Placing creative thinkers in leadership positions can shift the culture from maintenance to momentum. Systems should support vision, not suffocate it. When creativity shapes strategy at the top, structure can then be built around innovation instead of blocking it. The strongest organizations balance vision with execution, letting creative minds lead direction while structured teams bring it to life. Big words ≠ better science. There’s a big difference between:
👩‍🔬scientists debating molecular pathways in a lab
and
👭Giving practical exercise and nutrition advice to real people 🚩You do not need to talk about the hypothalamus to explain a calorie deficit.
🚩You do not need to map endocrine pathways to explain why different rep ranges build strength or muscle. Human physiology is complex.
Practical recommendations are not. When someone leans heavily on jargon instead of clarity, that’s a red flag. Good science communication makes complex ideas understandable not overwhelmingly complex. If you want to hear this contrast in real time, listen to Dr. Colenso-Semple’s recent appearance on @hubermanlab Podcast. It is a stark contrast to his earlier interview with Stacy Sims. Between these interviews notice the difference in:
🧐 The level of certainty
🧐 The complexity of the prescriptions
🧐 The incentives behind the messaging Sims sells books, courses, and supplements.
Colenso-Semple publishes and interprets research. Different incentives. Different messages! You can also listen to our conversation with Dr. Colenso-Semple on The Movement Logic Podcast, as well! 110: Fact-Checking Female-Specific Training & Nutrition Advice with Dr. Lauren Colenso-Semple, PhD 🗣️ Comment 110 and we’ll DM you the link to listen!

People don’t just adapt to systems. They defend them, even when those systems work against them. This is explained by System Justification Theory. It describes the tendency to rationalize and support existing structures, even at personal cost. The reason is psychological stability. Believing that the system is fundamentally unfair creates a serious internal conflict. If the game is rigged, then effort doesn’t guarantee results, outcomes feel uncontrollable, and your position may not be your fault, but also not easily changeable. That combination is hard to tolerate. So the mind looks for a way out. One option is confrontation: recognizing the problem and acting against it. That requires risk, uncertainty, and potential loss. Another option is accepting that you’re stuck in an unfair system, which can feel like helplessness. The third option is justification. You reinterpret the system as fair, necessary, or deserved. Losses become “part of the process” or personal responsibility. This reduces internal tension and restores a sense of order. That’s why people in difficult positions often defend the very structures that disadvantage them. It protects their psychological stability, even if it doesn’t improve their situation. Understanding this doesn’t automatically tell you what to do. But it makes one thing clear: comfort and truth are often in conflict. Maintaining one can mean distorting the other.
