سیستم سازی یعنی طراحیِ مجموعه ای از عناصر (فرآیندها، نقش ها، داده ها و قواعد) که با هم کار می کنند تا یک خروجی مشخص را به صورت قابل پیش بینی و تکرارشونده تولید کنند. این تعریف بهسادگی نشان می دهد که سیستم فقط «مستندسازی» نیست؛ سیستم یعنی «طراحی تکرارپذیری». منابع مدیریت بیان می کنند که سیستم سازی، هسته تبدیل دانش فردی به دارایی سازمانی است.
