I was asked, on a previous post, if I could show more body movement so this mornings pine coffee table legs I’ve tried to angle the phone to show more. Watch to the end to see the finish good tool control with slicing cuts gives, even on pine. Does this angle help? I’m limited as I only use my phone and no special tripods etc. other than an arm fixed to a piece of 2x1. Real speed and no music 😁 #woodworking #craft #woodturning #tableleg

This blank is from a total fail project from fall of 2024 ( the original video is still up on my YouTube - "A 3 Day Turn" ) I figured it should be dry enough to give turning this lovely piece of fractured wood again. I know there is something waiting in this walnut that's worth the effort! Hope your Monday was epic (in a good way) #woodturning #woodart #walnut #maker #lessonslearned

Two views of the same leg turning job. The long, low view really shows how I control the tool with my body and right hand, notice my right hand as I roll the beads with my 5/8” round skew. Pine, 60mm Square, 740mm long. Spinning at 1200rpm with the tool rest just above centre hight. Speeded up here from around 6 minutes. #woodturning #woodturner #woodlathe #woodwork #pinetablelegs

PEDESTAL BASES COME TOGETHER There was precision in every step of this project. The milling had to be dead on with nothing even slightly out of square. Crosscuts on the white oak veneer fins needed the utmost care to prevent splintering, and the coves between the fins had to be precisely placed. Absolute precision can be hard to achieve in an old school analog workshop. Even if I think a fence is square, I check it anyway. And I always have test stock for the different components to check before committing. #madeinwesternmass #diningtable #pedestaltable #madebyhand #precision

This was a shock to me and I had to share it. I started off great. I measured and marked my cuts so the insert would be exactly a half inch and centered in the bowl. I cut off one side, clean, square, great! Set that aside and cut the other side, and moved on without checking. Next I cut the insert and got it to a half inch so everything should line up. Except it didn't. My second cut on the bowl was not square. No idea what happened, but it was off by an eighth of an inch. So I cut it again to be square. I probably could have figured out the math to get the measurements my new insert should be, but I was too frustrated to bother. Yes, I can be a child sometimes. So I just glued in the leftover piece I had cut off the original insert. I thought, "it's gonna look stupid anyway now, so this will just be practice and learning for another time. The bowl was thick enough to accommodate the difference for sure." Then I put it on the lathe. And it ... Just worked! My original tenon was only off by about a millimeter. Everything lined up, the top rim was flat... I couldn't believe it. My eyeballs are not good at estimating to that level. It shouldn't have worked out that well. So today I am the blind squirrel, who found a nut. I hope something unexpected works out in your favor today as well. #woodturning #woodturner #woodturnersofinstagram

Turning a Finial Between Centres No video for the next few days, so not a tutorial but here’s one for you to enjoy! With voice over. I was recently asked how I would turn a finial without using a chuck. The answer: turn it between centres, starting with the thicker end first. You can mount it either way round in the lathe. The turning is slightly sped up, and sanding is shown at 4Γ— speed. Got questions? Drop them belowβ€”I’ll reply when I can (busy week of repeat production work ahead!). ⚠️ Safety first: Only try what you’re comfortable with. These are my methods, not necessarily the best way. Every woodturner is responsible for their own safety. πŸŽ₯ Enjoy the process and keep turning #woodturning
