Imagine sitting at home in 1973. It's 8am and you just finished listening to Ernie wax poetic about his rubber duckie on Sesame Street. Then out of nowhere Stevie Wonder comes on with his entire band, plays arguably his most iconic song that is not even a year old, and the kids lose their god damn mind on tv. Well that is exactly what happened when Stevie Wonder performed on Sesame Street and his almost 7 minute version of Superstition. But how many of you know that much of the song has to do with the brilliant Jeff Beck? Jeff was a big admirer of Stevie's. When Stevie heard this, he invited Jeff down to the Talking Book sessions. Jeff came up with the iconic drum beat and much of the melody of what you hear. The demo that was laid down was essentially all improv. In the end, Stevie played the drums, clavinet and moog bass on the track. In addition, you have the iconic Trevor Lawrence on sax and Steve Madaio on trumpet. And yes, that is @rayparkerjr on guitar. The first vinyl I ever bought was Stevie’s “Talking Book”, and I’ve been a fan ever since. Whether it was dancing to “You and I” at my wedding or grooving to “Signed, Sealed, Delivered” during Barack’s 2008 campaign, his music has been the soundtrack for some of my fondest memories. Focusing on a five-year stretch in which Stevie released five celebrated albums on Motown Records, The Wonder of Stevie podcast dives into his artistry — and features the perspectives of so many musical legends. With an unmistakable voice, groundbreaking use of synthesizers, and tight rhythmic instincts, he helped shape the sonic identity of an entire decade. During what many call his “classic period,” Wonder released a historic run of albums including Talking Book, Innervisions, and Songs in the Key of Life. These records blended rock energy, gospel roots, funk grooves, and socially conscious songwriting. Tracks like “Superstition” and “Higher Ground” showcased not just vocal brilliance, but rhythmic innovation — layered clavinet riffs, syncopated drum patterns, and melodic basslines that still influence artists today. What made Stevie stand apart was total musical control. He often played multiple instruments himself, building arrangements from the ground up. TONTO was a massive synthesizer rig put together over the course of years by Cecil and Margouleff in their studio in New York. It was used by many musicians in the ‘70s, perhaps most notably Stevie Wonder on Talking Book, Innervisions and other albums. TONTO is an acronym for “The Original New Timbral Orchestra”. At its heart, the synth comprises two Moog Modular Series III synths, plus an enormous number of supplementary modules made by Moog, Serge and other synth designers. It also incorporates two ARP 2600s, four Oberheim SEMS and other bits made by EMS, Roland and Yamaha. The synth was featured in Brian de Palma’s film “Phantom of the Paradise”, which I’ve posted about before. In the mid-1990s TONTO was moved to Mutato Muzika studios, the headquarters of Mark Mothersbaugh and Devo. In 2013, it was purchased by the National Music Centre in Calgary, Alberta, which still has it. Both Margouleff and Cecil had long careers as synth engineers, artists and performers. Stevie Wonder playing “Superstition” Live in 1974 ⁣ The birth of “Superstition” can be traced to the early 1970’s where Jeff Beck expressed his admiration for Stevie Wonder and reached out to his management about the possibility of a collaboration. This occurred just before the recording sessions for “Talking Book” was supposed to begin and Stevie openly embraced this development. ⁣So a deal was created where Jeff Beck was brought in to play some guitar parts on the album in exchange for a song. That song was “Superstition” and during one of the sessions, Stevie came up with the riff and wrote some lyrics, and they recorded a rough version of the song that day for Beck. However, it took Jeff Beck quite some time before he could record the song, and by the time he released it, Wonder’s version had been out for a month and was a huge hit. What happened was that when Stevie Wonder turned 21, he was no longer obligated to Motown Records, and used his clout to sign a deal with the label giving him unprecedented control of his music. He got a large share of royalties and publishing rights, and Motown was not allowed to alter the albums once they were delivered. One thing Motown did control, however, were what songs they released as singles. So Berry Gordy took the song and released it as a single before Jeff could record his version and it became a big hit. Beck, eventually recorded his version of the song with bass player Tim Bogert and drummer Carmine Appice. They recorded as Beck, Bogert and Appice, and while their album did well, their version of this song was hardly noticed. #Music #RockNRoll #StevieWonder #JeffBeck
