Andrei Tarkovsky: “I see the only meaning of human existence in the effort to overcome yourself spiritually, to become different from what you are at birth, in growing. If in that span, between the poles of birth and death, we manage to achieve this—even if it is hard and the advance is small—we will have served humanity.” Happy Birthday to Andrei Tarkovsky. Tarkovsky is a filmmaker who appreciated cinema. He made films that will challenge us and encourage spiritual and intellectual growth. Tarkovsky is, for me, a visionary of cinema. A real artist who not only provided life-changing experiences that I continuously think about, but an artist who valued artistic integrity over crowd-pleasing and making films just for money. Andrei Rublev (1966) Andrei Rublev (1966), directed by Andrei Tarkovsky, is a stark historical epic about a 15th-century Russian icon painter. Structured in episodes, it explores faith, violence, artistic doubt, and spiritual endurance amid medieval brutality. Censored in the USSR, it later became a landmark of poetic, philosophical cinema. #AndreiRublev #Tarkovsky #SovietCinema #ArtAndFaith #1960sFilm

Stalker (1979): a haunting journey into the unknown where faith, fear, and desire collide within the surreal wastelands of the Zone. Led by unforgettable performances from Aleksandr Kaydanovsky as the Stalker, Anatoly Solonitsyn as the Writer, and Nikolai Grinko as the Professor, the film captures the fear, curiosity, and desperation that drive the human spirit. Directed by the legendary Andrei Tarkovsky, Stalker is a masterclass in slow cinema. Tarkovsky’s meticulous pacing, atmosphere, and symbolism transform a dystopian sci-fi journey into a deeply spiritual and philosophical experience. Rejecting conventional Hollywood storytelling, the film embraces long, unbroken takes, minimal sound design, and an intentionally ambiguous narrative that invites endless interpretation. Cinematographer Alexander Knyazhinsky crafts a haunting visual world through desaturated tones, intricate compositions, and dreamlike camera movement, reflecting the characters’ inner struggles and existential dilemmas. The eerie score by Eduard Artemyev, blended with silence and natural sounds, amplifies the unsettling atmosphere of the Zone and lingers long after the film ends. More than just a movie, Stalker is a profound exploration of humanity’s desires, faith, and fears — a film that continues to influence cinema and spark discussion decades later. During the production of Stalker (1977–1979), Tarkovsky and many members of the crew worked for months in extremely polluted locations near the Jägala Dam in Estonia, downstream from a chemical factory. Here, the water and air were contaminated, and allergic reactions and health problems occurred multiple times among those present. To further complicate the shooting, the first version of the film had to be almost completely redone: the initial film reels developed in Soviet laboratories were ruined, making nearly all of the already shot scenes unusable. Tarkovsky therefore had to start almost from scratch, hiring a new cinematographer, Alexander Knyazhinsky, and facing extreme working conditions to complete his masterpiece. Anatoly Solonitsyn (actor in Stalker) died of lung cancer in 1982; years later, Tarkovsky and his wife Larisa (assistant director) developed the same disease. Some surviving crew members have linked these cases to exposure to contaminants at the shooting locations. #thesacrifice #andreytarkovsky #tarkovsky #imdb #filmtok
