These are my top 5 things you should consider before getting patchwork tattoos based off my experience as a tattoo artist who does patchwork and large scale/sleeve work!
1. Don’t get a patchwork tattoo smack dab in the middle of your thigh or outer bicep! That’s primetime real estate! If you think you might consider a larger piece in those areas, wait on it, and then get smaller, tattoos around that!
2. Consider the style of patchwork tattoos that you’re getting! If you still want a cohesive limb, but like patchwork, try to get all your patchwork tattoos done relatively in the same style. This doesn’t mean that you can’t go to different artists for tattoos but just be more selective about what and who!
3. Think about if you’re ever going to want a full cohesive sleeve in the future before getting patchwork tattoos! A lot of times people will have the urge to get a tattoo so they’ll just go get something random, and then realize they want a full sleeve, sometimes you’re able to incorporate it in relatively well and a lot of other times the previous tattoo can stick out like a sore thumb!
4. Don’t get patchwork tattoos just because they’re typically cheaper because they’re smaller and quicker! If you think a sleeve is out of your budget, don’t just get smaller tattoos because that’s what you think you can afford! No, good tattoos aren’t cheap, but, tattoos are forever and they can wait so sometimes it’s smarter to just save your money and wait for the right time!
5. If you like patchwork and think that’s the right style for you make sure to find an artist who isn’t just gonna slap tattoos on you, but is going to design your pieces like puzzle pieces so it’ll fit really nicely together! Sometimes when you get patchwork tattoos you start to get weird little gaps! Find an artist who will design a tattoo to fit an area perfectly or find some good filler!
