Here’s the first six tricks I’d personally teach to get started in dog dancing! Each trick works on a different skill for the dog/puppy. Plus all of these are safe for all ages! (Except for maybe dog catch for senior dogs) 1. Spin left / right: learn directional cues, helps with body awareness 2. Leg weaves: learn to move with the human 3: Back up: body awareness and introduces distance 4. Bravo (bow): stationary trick to work on waiting until released 5. Footsies: introduces targeting 6. Dog Catch: learn to safely jump and builds trust ALL of these tricks are good for confidence building and strengthening your bond, but some tricks tackle specific skills. Trick training is one of my favorite ways to connect with my dogs!! It is not about perfection or flashy skills, but about spending time together and building a relationship based on trust and communication. When you practice tricks together, you are learning how to communicate as a team! Your dog learns to focus on you, and you learn how they think and learn best. That shared understanding helps build trust and confidence on both sides. Learning new tricks is also a great confidence booster!!! Small successes encourage them to try new things and feel proud of themselves. You can teach your dogs to bring anything from toys to random things around the house! like flowers on your birthday, a TV remote when you are lazy, or even make them a little ring bearer at a wedding! possibilities are endless! Things you need ☞ Grab high-value treats (we use dehydrated chicken breast – recipe on the blog!) ☞ Have a few items ready (toys, soft objects, different textures) Here’s how I taught this trick step by step: 1. Teach “Take, Hold and drop” Start with a large treat or a toy your dog loves in one hand and a high-value treat on another. The moment your dog grabs it, mark and reward Build duration slowly so they learn to hold, not drop Teach “drop” / “give” so they learn to release the item to you Practice with different objects, shapes, and textures 2. Teach “Pick up” from the floor Place the item on the ground. When they pick it up, mark and reward 3. Add distance and duration Encourage them to pick it up and move towards you Mark and reward when they bring it back to you Practice until consistent and keep it fun! Bonus ✎ Start with easy-to-hold items to build confidence ✎ Keep sessions short to avoid chewing or frustration ✎ Always reward when the item is brought to you, not just picked ✎ Introduce a clear release cue early (“drop” or “give”) ✎ Dogs learn best through small, clear steps; don’t rush it Step 1 is the hardest, so take your time. We have an indept tutorial on ‘hold’ separately. Once your knows how to hold, the rest is super easy!
