As the world continues to grapple with the consequences of AI — job loss, the fear of manipulation, surveillance and data collection — the technology’s immense energy use is also creating environmental harm. In places like Boxtown, a 90% Black neighborhood in South Memphis, AI facilities release toxic emissions into communities already facing high rates of pollution-related illness. According to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, more than 100 communities across the U.S. have enacted local moratoriums against these kinds of data centers. On March 25, she and Sen. Bernie Sanders introduced new legislation — the Artificial Intelligence Data Center Moratorium Act — which would pause the creation of new data centers until “strong national safeguards” are put in place to protect workers, consumers, the environment, and civil rights at large.

Data centers that power AI use huge amounts of water and electricity, and they’re often built near Black communities—leaving us with higher bills, more strain, and more environmental impact while companies profit. At the same time, AI is being pushed into schools, jobs, and everyday life to monitor people and make decisions about us, often without our input. And big tech is pushing for fewer rules while limiting local protections. This isn’t just tech, it’s about who benefits and who pays the price. We deserve a say in what’s built in our communities and how it’s used.
