Before you buy a TEFL course, read this.
Because not all certifications are created equal and choosing the wrong one could cost you your time, money, and the teaching job you’re dreaming of.
If you’re trying to teach English abroad and just starting this journey, a TEFL certification + a degree is one of the most accessible ways to begin.
But before you go and spend money, make sure your TEFL certification includes these three things:
1. 120 Hours Minimum
This is the international standard. Anything less is often not accepted by schools or visa authorities and you’ll instantly get filtered out.
2. Recognized Accreditation
Your course should be accredited by a legitimate, independent organization (like Ofqual, ACCET, or DEAC). If you can’t find clear info on who’s accrediting it, skip it.
3. A Teaching Practicum
Some schools won’t consider your application unless your TEFL includes real classroom practice (even online) with actual students. It shows you can apply what you learned and makes your resume stronger from day one.
Invest wisely. Your TEFL should open doors, not close them.
