RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK (1981)
Indiana Jones was one of my childhood obsessions, and to this day, I can still pretty much quote the original trilogy verbatim. However Raiders holds one of my seminal cinematic memories, and one of my favourite SFX montages of all time that belongs in the pantheon of the goriest of body horror – the deadly, melty consequences of the Ark.
What’s your favourite Indy outing? And what scene scarred you most? Admittedly, I was much more upset by Temple of Doom’s monkey brain sequence (🤢) than Toht’s and co’s death.
The Ark sequence is stunning, and never ceases to blow my mind; it still looks so incredible to this day. @ilmvfx was instrumental in creating many of the notable sequences in Raiders, including the finale, which was achieved via a clever mix of small gossamer puppets filmed in a water tank and a variety of optical effects, the sequence used every trick in the book.
Live action footage was enhanced with opticals and matte paintings, including the creation of the now famous warehouse where the Ark is stored. More than 50 passes were made on some shots to increase image quality for the film’s climactic ending. ILM’s special effects team was honored with the Academy Award® for Best Visual Effects for their work on the film. (Via. ILM’s website)

Set in 1935 (a prequel to Raiders of the Lost Ark), the story follows archaeologist Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford), his young sidekick Short Round (Ke Huy Quan), and nightclub singer Willie Scott (Kate Capshaw).
After fleeing a Chinese mob in Shanghai, they crash-land in India and arrive at a desperate village. The villagers believe they were sent by the gods to find their sacred Sankara Stone and rescue their children, who have been kidnapped by a mysterious cult.
The trio travels to Pankot Palace, where they are initially treated to a lavish (but disgusting) feast. Deep beneath the palace, Indy discovers a literal "Temple of Doom" where the Thuggee cult performs human sacrifices to the goddess Kali. Indy must recover the stones, free the enslaved children, and escape a high-speed mine cart chase to save the day.
