One of the most dangerous myths about colorectal cancer? Thinking you only need to worry if it runs in your family. Up to 80% of cases happen with zero family history. In today’s episode, @katiecouric and @drfolamay explain why getting screened when you feel perfectly fine is actually your greatest advantage. It gives doctors the chance to find and remove polyps early—stopping cancer before it can spread. No family history is no guarantee, but early screening is your best protection. You have the power to protect your future, so schedule your screening today! 🎧 Listen to the full conversation at the link in our bio. #colorectalcancerawarenessmonth #uclahealth #maylabucla #preventativecare #colonoscopy

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. Screening now starts at age 45 — and it could save your life. Colon cancer is often preventable with early detection. Colonoscopy or at-home stool testing options are available — talk with your provider about what’s right for you. Yes, fiber and balanced plates support gut health… but screening is what finds cancer early. Don’t wait for symptoms. 💙 #ColorectalCancerAwareness #ScreenAt45 #ColonHealth #PreventiveCare #EarlyDetectionSavesLives

It was another long day in the OR, but I wanted to connect to share that March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. As a colorectal surgeon, I need you to understand something: This is the most preventable cancer we face—yet it’s now the #1 cancer killer in people under 50. Let that sink in. Preventable. Yet deadly. ⚠️ Why the disconnect? Because people are missing screenings. Ignoring symptoms. Assuming they’re “too young.” Waiting until it’s too late. ⏰ Here’s what I see in the OR that keeps me up at night: ❌ 20-year-olds with Stage 4 disease ❌ 35-year-olds who blamed symptoms on stress ❌ 40-year-olds who didn’t know screening starts at 45 The good news. ✨When we catch it early, survival rates are over 90%. ✨Colonoscopies can find and remove precancerous polyps before they ever become cancer. ✨Screening literally prevents cancer from happening. KNOW THESE SIGNS: 🚨Changes in bowel habits 🚨Rectal bleeding or blood in stool 🚨Persistent abdominal cramping 🚨Unexplained weight loss 🚨Constant fatigue Don’t wait. Don’t ignore. Don’t assume. ✓ If you’re 45+, schedule your colonoscopy ✓ If you have symptoms at ANY age, demand to be taken seriously ✓ If you have a family history, talk to your doctor about earlier screening This month isn’t just about awareness—it’s about action. Your life could literally depend on what you do next. 💜 #ColorectalCancerAwarenessMonth #GetScreened #PreventionSavesLives #ColonCancer

“How would I know if I had colorectal cancer?” The difficult answer is that early colorectal cancer often causes no symptoms at all. That’s why screening is so important. When symptoms do occur, they can include: • Blood in the stool • Persistent constipation or diarrhea • Unexplained iron deficiency anemia • Abdominal pain • Unintentional weight loss These symptoms are common and often caused by things other than cancer. But persistent symptoms deserve evaluation. This is also why screening exists. It allows us to find polyps or early cancers before symptoms appear. Colorectal Cancer, Explained. Day 4 ✅

Colorectal cancer isn’t just an “older person’s” disease. I lost one of my best friends to it, and I want to share how you can protect yourself and the people you love. Right now, colorectal cancer rates in young adults (ages 20-40) are surging by 2% every year. While lifestyle factors like diet play a role, early detection is your absolute best defense: ✅ Get screened by age 45 (via Cologuard or colonoscopy). ✅ Have a family history? Start screening by age 40. ✅ Listen to your body: Never ignore changes in your bowel habits or poop, regardless of your age. Talk to a doctor immediately. Don’t wait. Be proactive about your health and share this to protect someone you care about. 💙 #doctor #fyp
