Dogs aren’t born knowing how to settle. It’s something we have to teach. Tether training is one of the simplest ways to help a dog learn calmness. By giving them a small, defined space and allowing them to work through the initial fussing, you teach patience, self-soothing, and real-world relaxation. The most important part: You have to ignore the dog completely during the exercise — even if they whine or bark. Responding (talking, eye contact, petting, correcting) makes the behavior stronger. Let them work through it on their own unless there’s a safety concern. Tether training also prevents so many common issues: chewing, pacing, shadowing you, getting into things, and that constant “what now?” mindset. For puppies, adolescent dogs, and dogs with separation worries, this exercise can be a game changer for teaching structure and helping them learn how to just exist calmly at home. It’s important to realize that ATTENTION is a reward to your dog. Rewards reinforce behaviors. So, the more your dog gets attention while they’re jumping & barking, the more they’re going to offer those behaviors. Tethering is a great option if you don’t have anyone around to hold the leash or help you with training. The tether will prevent your dog from being able to crowd your guest, so that the wrong behaviors don’t accidentally get reinforced. You want to reinforce CALMNESS instead - so don’t let them to greet your guest until they are much calmer! You’ll notice over time that you don’t have to use the leash nearly as much, till you can do away with it completely. The tether in my house is closer to the front door than I’d like - the farther you can get it from your door, the easier it will be for your dog to calm down. Comment any questions and I’ll answer as many as I can. Why it’s important to tether your puppy🤙 Amazing video by @autumn_sayitonce from in Washington D.C. about tether training a puppy. Tethering your dog means using a leash or a long line to attach your dog to yourself or a stationary object as a training tool. This can be used to manage your dog’s behavior, ensuring the dog remains within a certain range and can be easily corrected or guided as needed. A couple benefits of tethering: - Teaches the dog how to settle on their own! This is important for dogs that struggle with the need to always be doing something. Sometimes the best thing for them is to learn to turn their brain off and just chill. In training we use a lot of “place” and crate training where we practice this skill, but sometimes our dogs don’t have a healthy in between mindset. Tethering creates the idea that there does not have to be a command given to achieve calmness. - Teaches a dog how to work through frustration on their own. Your dog WILL get frustrated when it’s tethered! (At first!) This puppy’s name is Holden. He’s 14 weeks old and this was his first time being tethered with me. He barked at me for about 10 minutes before settling down. He wanted attention, to be near me, to be active, etc., but we already trained, played, walked, it was time to settle! I didn’t give into any of the barking and even let him figure out how to undo the leash from his own legs. These small moments where he’s overcoming stress / problem solving are preparing him for the bigger moments in his life where he will need this skill the most. Some examples of this are separation anxiety and reactivity. - Supervision and prevention. Similar to how we use the crate, we want a place that we can put our dog where we know they’re safe and can’t get to anything they shouldn’t have. Tethering can allow another hands-free option to monitor your dog and prevent behaviors like chewing, potty accidents, getting in the trash, etc. They’ll either not be able to get to it or they’re attached to you so you can stop it. * Always supervise!

🐾One way to work on jumping up is by using a tether. We especially like to use tether training with large powerful dogs, but it can work for many pets. ✨Tethering the dog gives us the ability to remove ourselves if the dog decides to jump or mouth. This also makes it easier for our dog to be successful. 🍖 We reward the dogs heavily if they choose to sit or lay down when they are tethered. Food is the best initial reward, but eventually you can begin using some petting if they dog is an attention seeker like Kobe the pit. We’ll show some others ways we work on jumping up this week! #dogbehavior #puppyclass #puppyschool #puppiesofinstagram #dogswithanxiety

Why does my puppy wear a leash in the house? Because puppy behavior is shaped by repetition and practice. If we give them too much freedom too soon, they end up practicing all the things we DONT want them to do when they’re an adult dog like jumping, chewing, bolting through doors, or having accidents. Too much freedom can actually slow down potty training! Using a leash indoors is a commonly used management tool in the dog training world that helps you catch and interrupt unwanted behavior, guide your puppy toward making better choices, and prevent problems before they start. It’s that advice you get in puppy classes that some people completely skip because they don’t know how beneficial it really is. It’s especially helpful during: • Potty training • The first few weeks in a new home • Times when supervision is limited • Transition periods (like going from crate to full freedom) This isn’t a forever thing (despite some belief in the comment thread 😉) but it’s amazing while your puppy is still learning how to live in your home without being a total lunatic. When done right, this method actually builds your puppy’s confidence, improves communication between both of you, and speeds up their learning in a big way. #puppytraining #positivereinforcement #puppytips #pottytrainingpuppy #dogtrainingadvice #tethertraining #puppylife #newpuppy

Tired of your dog bouncing off the walls at home? 🐶✨ Let’s talk place training and tethering ,two game changing tools for teaching calm behavior and impulse control. 🏡 Place training teaches your dog to relax on a designated spot, even with distractions. 🔗 Tethering adds structure and safety, especially during early training stages or when guests are over. Together, they help your dog calm down faster, build independence, and stop following you like a shadow 24/7. Structured doesn’t mean strict — it means freedom through boundaries. 💪 📲 Want to learn how to do this at home? It’s important to realize that ATTENTION can reinforce whatever behavior(s) your dog is showing. The more your dog gets attention while they’re jumping & barking, the more they’re going to offer those behaviors. We recommend teaching a solid “enough” or “calm” cue, and a great way to do that is by tethering your dog or standing on the leash! The tether in my house is closer to the front door than I’d like - the farther you can get it from your door, the easier it will be for your dog to calm down. No, my dog is not being abused by not being allowed to jump on guests. Dogs can absolutely learn to show excitement in safer, more appropriate ways!
