Researchers in the Katia Bertoldi Group at SEAS are creating multistable knit fabrics that can be folded, sculpted, and even illuminated when embedded with circuitry. Their work is now on view at @harvardartlab in “Knitted Light and Responsive Textiles.” ✨ Wall hangings that reveal hidden text ✨ Colorful textile polyhedra floating in space ✨ Interactive pieces that invite you to touch, pull, and explore “I'm especially fascinated with things like human object interactivity, and thinking about how functional purposes can be used as also an aesthetic and artistic means,” said Zhang. “As a mechanical engineer, I find it really fascinating to think about how these components interact on a holistic scale. Through fiber and textile-based practices, this exhibition honors the deep histories embedded in craft while embracing the expansive possibilities of contemporary art. Rooted in techniques passed down through generations, many of these works pay homage to the labor, knowledge, and cultural memory woven into cloth. At the same time, the 29 artists gathered here — spanning the globe from San Diego to France — push fiber beyond expectation. Experimenting with scale, structure, and concept, they reimagine what textiles can communicate in a modern context. Thread becomes line. Fabric becomes language. Stitch becomes story.

Fibre Study Party ✨ I can’t get over the fact that I can just send a video of one of my favourite textile artists, @junele.sandra , to one of my professors and she answers with a “when are you free to come play in the FabLab with me?” I am so excited to be in an environment where my teachers are eager to play and learn, and more than willing to actively participate in student development activities. As an Arts Education student, I get to spend my undergraduate studies developing my artistic skills, as well as learn to become an educator. Regine, @growing_material_for_art , teaches Fibre Arts, Papermaking, and Foundational Studio at Bishop’s University, and has been studying flax pulp and its various uses in textiles. Together, we studied a few of Sandra Junele’s videos, and through Regine’s extensive paper making work and my always growing fibre stash, we attempted to our own fibre paper.
