THThe Music Video to โArt Schoolโ by The Jam
When The Jam released In the City in 1977, they didnโt arrive as another punk band trying to burn everything down. What they brought was focus. While much of punk leaned on chaos and shock value, The Jam tightened the screws and redirected that energy through discipline, melody, and sharp songwriting. Paul Weller was barely out of his teens, but he understood something most bands his age didnโt: anger works best when itโs structured. The record is fast, urgent, and stripped down, but itโs also rooted in the lineage of British rock where it features the sharp attack of The Who, the melodic instincts of the Kinks, and the attitude of Londonโs streets in the late โ70s.
Songs like โIn the Cityโ and โArt Schoolโ capture that moment when frustration turns into movement. The guitars are clipped and precise, the rhythm section drives everything forward, and Weller sings with the conviction of someone who sees the world clearly and doesnโt like what he sees. Thereโs no wasted space. Every track moves with purpose. What made In the City revolutionary was the way it reconnected punk with British musical identity. The Jam proved you could channel the urgency of punk without abandoning craft. The riffs were tight, the melodies memorable, and the songwriting already hinted at the sophistication that would later define the mod revival and much of British alternative music that followed.

From a TV special in Denmark broadcast on 29 April, 1982. The Jam performed 12 songs.
"Town Called Malice" was released as the lead single from the Jam's sixth (and final) album, 'The Gift', in 1982. Like almost all of the band's tracks, it was written by frontman Paul Weller. This was a number 1 hit in the UK - the success of "Town Called Malice" actually prevented "Golden Brown" by the Stranglers from reaching the number 1 chart position.
Just over five months after this performance, the Jam would split. The decision to break up the band was solely Weller's - he has indicated in interviews since that he wanted the band to end while they were still in their peak. Weller and his two bandmates didn't speak for decades after the split.
