When the bobcat kittens โ€” a brother and sister โ€” were found near a rest stop along the side of a road in Condon, Oregon, on May 19, 2025, they each weighed less than a pound. At just a month old, they were showing signs of dehydration, hypothermia, external parasites and diarrhea. Officials believed their mother had been killed by a vehicle. Today, the young bobcats are back in the wild, beginning a new chapter of independence and fending for themselves. On March 20, 2026, after about 10 months of rehabilitation, the cats were successfully released in a remote area near Dayville. The 'Spicy Blep' is a rare defensive maneuver... or at least, thatโ€™s what this guy wants us to think. ๐Ÿ‘๏ธ๐Ÿ‘…๐Ÿ‘๏ธ While checking in on this bobcat at one of our remote enclosures (the final step before heโ€™s released!), we discovered his signature move. Apparently, you can't be fierce without a raspberry growl! Scale of 1-10: How intimidated are you? (Safety check: This video is heavily zoomed in - weโ€™re keeping our distance so he stays wild and we stay safe!) #WildlifeRehab #WildlifeRescue #Bobcat #GCWR #Wildlife

The video captures a real 2024 incident in Arizona where a bobcat, distressed by 115ยฐF heat, drinks from a hose-created puddle and rests on wet ground, demonstrating acute heat stress behaviors like panting and lethargy common in felids. Bobcats adapt to hot climates by reducing activity during midday and using thermal refuges, but extreme heatwaves exacerbate dehydration risks, as shown in a 2022 PMC study on desert bobcats maintaining smaller ranges to conserve energy. Such human interventions can aid wildlife without harm when non-invasive, reflecting bobcats' urban tolerance; a 2023 Frontiers study notes they seek cover near humans for cooling, though experts advise against feeding to prevent dependency.

Working in wildlife rehabilitation is not an easy career. The reality is that there are more losses than releases, and thatโ€™s no fault of the rehabbers. Animals often arrive in critical condition, and there are days where all you do is euthanize incoming patients. Animals with missing limbs, broken bones, poisoning, severe neurological damage, or injuries from well-meaning but illegal care. Despite the weight of being the one who makes those decisions, I do so with as much kindness and compassion as I can give. Because they might not get released back to the wild, but at least I can release them from pain. Pain that was, almost always, caused by humans. But there are successes. Bones that can be fixed. Neurological symptoms that can be treated. Wounds that heal. Orphans raised without losing their wild instincts. Thatโ€™s what happened with these two bobcats. Ten months of rehabilitative care, and then release. Back to the wild, where they were always meant to be. And I hope theyโ€™re thriving out there. โค๏ธ #wildliferehabilitation #wildliferehab

Last summer's orphaned Bobkittens--well, they're full cats now!--are only a month away from release! ๐Ÿ˜ As distant relatives of our beloved house cats, they share a lot of the same body language! But can you read what these two Bobcats are communicating in this video? ๐Ÿฑ In this video, a staff member was peeking into their enclosure through a grated window to check their water, when two pairs of eyes looked back up at her: They were chowing down on venison directly below the window! While the Bobcats would normally run off to hide, these two have learned that the scary humans can't get them through this window. (Clever girl!) They still prefer to keep their distance, so they ambled off, about 12ft away to wait for the prying eyes to leave them to their meal. The female is growling quietly and glaring warily toward the window, while the male--more relaxed--is lashing his tail in annoyance. He isn't pleased with the situation, but he knows he's safe enough. Both are keeping an ear or two angled toward us to listen for any sudden moves. If our staff member had opened the door to the enclosure, they would have scampered off into the rafters above. They want NOTHING to do with humans, and that's exactly what we want as wildlife rehabilitators! โค A part of our hearts ache to see those once tiny, bottle-fed kittens grow up to fear us. But we know that this natural fear of humans will keep them safe in the wild! After all they've been through, they deserve no less than the best possible chance at a life of freedom in the great outdoors! ๐Ÿ™Œ #wildliferehabilitation #bobcats #wildcats #bigcats #catbodylanguage
