ASThe Midnight Rescue
Dr. Aston was never one for fancy hotels. He preferred the rhythmic chirping of crickets and the smell of damp pine needles. However, on his third night camping deep in the Whispering Woods, the peaceful atmosphere was shattered by a sharp, panicked bleat.
A Life in the Balance
Dr. Aston grabbed his heavy-duty flashlight and stepped out of his tent. Just past a thicket of ferns, the beam of his light caught a pair of glowing, amber eyes. A large, grey wolf was crouching, muscles tensed, ready to spring upon a tiny fawn trapped against a fallen log. The young deer was shivering, its leg caught in a tangle of thorny briars.
The Intervention
"Hey! Back off!" Dr. Aston shouted, his voice booming with the authority he usually reserved for a chaotic ER room. He didn't have a weapon, but he swung his flashlight in wide, blinding arcs and banged a metal cooking pot against a stone.
Startled by the noise and the aggressive light, the wolf let out a low growl, weighed its options, and eventually vanished into the shadows of the forest.
The Gentle Touch
With the predator gone, Dr. Aston knelt beside the fawn. "Easy there, little one," he whispered. Using his surgical precision, he carefully untangled the thorns from the fawn's leg. He checked the woundāit was a shallow scratch, nothing a bit of antiseptic from his first-aid kit couldn't handle.
Once freed and treated, the fawn stood up on shaky legs. It looked at Dr. Aston for a brief, silent secondāa moment of pure connection between healer and patientābefore disappearing into the safety of the brush. Dr. Aston smiled, headed back to his tent, and finally slept, knowing he had performed his most important "surgery" of the year.
