some of the best queues and focuses I use when throwing that I have learned from my catching coach from last year, @yoyo_donovan 💨 get the ball out QUICK, if you throw it 85 to second base but it’s a 2.2, he’s safe, challenge yourself in training everyday to see how quick you can get it out 🎯 be ACCURATE, doesn’t matter how fast or quick you get the ball to second base if it sails into CF; give your MIF a ball they can make a tag on 🔁 CHEAT YOUR BODY as much as you can, this obviously is pitch dependent but this is going to help you shave off time and get in a position to throw as soon as possible (something I need to improve upon from the throws shown here) 🙌🏻 Be ATHELTIC behind the plate, try different arm angles on different pitch locations, be “suave” behind the plate, make it look easy #catching #throwdowns #catcherthrows #d1baseball #michiganbaseball

Body awareness is everything! Honestly, I struggled with it offensively for a long time but I’ve had body awareness in catching for most of my life. My throws are all feel, so when I worked on them it was all about making small adjustments. Little tweaks that might seem insignificant, but could make all the difference. The point is I knew what MY throw felt like when it was at its best because I worked really hard for repeatability. . I honestly think I’ve thrown a ball nearly a million times, mostly because I don’t know if I have a concept of a million, but between bullpens, practices, throw downs, and games over 23 years it really feels like a million, just ask my shoulder 🫠 But the fine tuning is where the fun is so that I didn’t have to think about it in a game. Back foot underneath starting back leg leaning/drifting towards target rotating the back hip as the arm is flipping up with the chest still until front foot strike, you then unravel around your head; this allows the rubber band snap effect everyone talks about! But elite throwdowns are built on four precise phases that happen in under 2 seconds. 1️⃣ Pre-Pitch Movement
Drive your knee toward second base right before the ball hits your mitt — not too early, not too late. This sets you up before the catch without throwing off your sequence. 2️⃣ Back Foot Down + Transfer Initiated
Get that back foot down quick, in the right spot, without wasting movement. Initiate your transfer immediately and get a clean grip. 3️⃣ Full Scap Retraction + Front Foot Down
Front foot plants in line toward second, arm fully retracted like a bow before firing, lower body loaded and ready. 4️⃣ Forward Direction + Release
