There are also credible links to hypothyroidism. 12. Track and test thyroid labs regularly: Work with a provider to monitor TSH, Free T3, Free T4, Reverse T3, and antibodies (TPO, TgAb). You may have to push for the whole panel, but it’s worth it! 13. Avoid over-supplementing iron: Excess iron can contribute to oxidative stress, so test your ferritin levels before supplementing. 14. Red light therapy: Numerous studies have shown the benefit of supporting thyroid health with red light therapy. I use the LUMEBOX daily over my thyroid. Cycle Syncing: Aligning your diet, exercise + stress management with your menstrual cycle can support hormone balance and ease thyroid-related symptoms. 16. If you’re lifting weights, listen to your body and know when you’re overdoing it. Limit cardio. 19. Limit processed carbs: Avoid high-glycemic foods that spike blood sugar and insulin, which can stress the thyroid. 20. Support liver health: The liver is essential for hormone conversion and detoxification. There are food groups where substantive evidence supports a link to an autoimmune disease of the thyroid that slows down your metabolism. Gluten is one of them. You can simply eliminate gluten from your diet for three weeks. If your symptoms go away, you have a clue that your system might not like this food. If you want to take this self-test a step further, reintroduce gluten into your diet and see if your symptoms recur. If they do, that is another major clue. Besides certain foods and food allergies, toxins can slow down your thyroid. Testing yourself for mercury and getting it out of your system and your environment becomes crucial.  Lastly, it’s also super important to make sure you’re getting in key nutrients for healthy thyroid function. Being deficient in selenium, iodine, zinc, vitamins A and D, and omega 3 fats can also cause thyroid issues. You need to consume five food groups to improve your thyroid health. This is for everybody and especially if you have hypothyroidism. First are foods that are rich in selenium. You get them from Brazil nuts. If you can just presoak two Brazil nuts per day and consume them, you will get almost 100 to 200 mcg of selenium. Selenium helps in improving thyroid function and also the production of thyroid hormones T3 and T4. This is a great way of keeping your thyroid health in check. Second, you need iodine in your diet. Iodine deficiency has been linked with two billion people developing thyroid problems around the world as per the WHO. You can get iodine from iodized salt. In India, we commonly use iodized salt like Tata Namak. You can also get iodine from seaweed like nori and kelp, and even strawberries are a rich source of iodine. Iodine helps in protecting your thyroid health and reducing the risk of goitrogens, which are associated with swelling and inflammation of the thyroid gland. Third, you need antioxidants. Antioxidants take care of the free radicals that are floating around in the body and affecting the thyroid gland. You can get antioxidants from berries, cherries, and strawberries. All these astringent foods are a great source of antioxidants. They help in reducing oxidative stress and improving overall immunity and health. Fourth, you need zinc in your diet.
