Here’s how to pick ki, #ti leaf 🍃 properly. Growing up in a Halau, we got LICKENS if we used a scissors. Scissor to #harvest, debone or stripping….we used our hands, teeth & fingernails 😅
🚫😩So just wasted to PSA, cuz we went to #ulupo heiau and someone used a scissor to cut from the top(the long good #green leaves)..
🌱 If you want the ones in the middle, you MUST start pulling leaves from the bottom.
🍂 Yes the bottoms are probably yellow & brown, but you can just drop them on the ground and feed it back to itself. (Decomposition)
🧅 it’s like layers, #peel and TUG sharply straight down. One swooping motion
🍃 Continue upward and take what u need.
🛑 Stop and leave the top 5-6 leaves. Going higher than this point may break off the keiki.
👊🏽 but if u happen to tug a take it’s head off, it will regrow. But going take long’er, and May stunt the size of future #leaves.

SULāʻī or ti leaf lei are one of the most common type of lei that are requested year round. As a lei maker, I use ti leaves mainly for creating leis. Within the Polynesian culture, ti leaves are used for so much more than just lei making. Here are some uses:
✨️The leaves can be boiled and consumed as a medicinal tea for a variety of ailments.
✨️The leaves can be used as a type of natural "foil" and used to steam or grill foods. Growing up, my aunt taught us how to make a dish we named ti leaf chicken. It was chicken seasoned with sea salt, wrapped with ti leaves, and then grilled. Sounds very simplistic, but we thought it was amazing as children.
✨️Ti leaves are often used in ceremonies and blessings. They can be fashioned into a pū'olo, which is a type of container / bundle that would traditionally carry some type of offering or gift.
In short, ti leaves are so much more than just tropical foliage. Let's all show some appreciation and love for this beautiful plant. 🌱
