In our everyday lives, the “time” we follow so religiously is simply a measure of change. The ticking of a watch is nothing but the oscillation of a tiny quartz crystal inside it, vibrating precisely 32,768 times per second. Yes, that’s what gives us the “seconds” we count! But why is 1 second considered a unit of time?
1 second was historically defined as 1/86,400 of a day—the time Earth takes to rotate once. However, as science advanced, this wasn’t precise enough.
Today, 1 second is defined as the time it takes for a cesium-133 atom to vibrate 9,192,631,770 times in an atomic clock! Incredible, isn’t it?
But here’s the twist—this measurement works because we observe changes. Without change, there’s no “time.” Does this mean time is just an illusion? Or is it something deeper, interwoven into the very fabric of our universe?
From Einstein’s relativity, which showed us how time dilates near massive objects or at high speeds, to the mysteries of quantum mechanics and the arrow of time we’ve only scratched the surface of understanding time.
