Flea dirt may be the only sign- this looks like tiny black pepper-like debris. If you put it on a white paper towel and spray with water, it will turn reddish.
Fleas are notoriously difficult to get rid of as they lay eggs and reproduce in the carpet and areas in the house. They move quickly and continue to jump on and off the animal. It’s important to treat the environment as well as all pets.
If you suspect your pet has fleas, prescription flea medications are the most effective. Talk to your vet about which medicine is best for your individual pet to treat the fleas and help control their itching.

TAFleas are the OG vampires 🧛🏻♂️
I was so sure these fleas wouldn’t escape as I was picking them up to put them on the slide; never have I ever been so wrong 😂 I actually managed to find them and put them back in their container so my cat would be out of danger hehe!
Fleas are most certainly very odd little parasitic insects. They’re flattened from side to side, which helps them making their way through the fur or feathers of their hosts (also makes it pretty damn hard to pick them up by hand but at least they easily fit on a well slide with a cover glass: talking from experience right here haha 😬). They have been around for millions of year, evolving along side their mammalian and bird hosts, sucking on that good blood soup!
There are around 2,500 species of fleas; most of them are ectoparasites of mammals, especially of rodents, but 6% of them live on birds. Fleas possess modified mouthparts for piercing skin and sucking blood and their hind legs are highly adapted to jumping. Adults usually measure between 1 and 8 mm and have brown colour which is perfect to hide in fur or feathers. They also have a thick protective exoskeleton, making them damn hard to kill, as well as sharp and pointy little claws so they can grasp onto their hosts and never leave 🙄 talk about clingy creatures
The life cycle of a flea has four stages: egg, larva, pupa and adult. Female flea usually lay her eggs directly on the host’s fur or feather, after feeding copiously on a host’s blood. When the eggs hatch, the larvae, which look like little worms, feed on debris from the environment or flea feces. These larvae then form a cocoon as they enter the pupae stage before emerging as adult fleas.
Not only fleas are known to cause anemia when found in great quantity on pets but they can also transmit various diseases like bubonic plague and typhus. If you have cats or dogs, please make sure to periodically check their fur for parasites and to treat them when necessary 🤍

DRFlea Allergy Dermatitis often presents as:
- Hair loss at the base of the tail and on the back legs
- Flakiness of the skin
- Crusting and redness of the skin
- Itch level is extremely high
Sometimes you see fleas… we did with this dog, but many times, especially in cats, there are no fleas seen.
Treatment:
1) Flea prevention for affected pet and ALL other dogs and cats in the household.
2) Vacuum, wash bedding, and clean household.
3) Antibiotics if infection is present from skin trauma…
Do a cytology!
4) Medicated shampoo for irritation & infection.
5) +/- Steroids for the itchiness
How long is the flea life cycle? That’s how long I make sure to recommend flea prevention for the household. Obviously in Texas, year round prevention is ideal!

RUse viene el calor y se activan las pulgas, ya es momento de poner alguna pipeta antipulgas, hay algunas que el efecto dura 3 meses. La pipeta hay que aplicarla sobre la piel de la parte superior del cuello. A veces no se ven las pulgas pero se ven puntitos negros que son la materia fecal de las pulgas, estos puntitos están sobre la piel y al tocarlos con un algodón humedecido con agua, dan un color rojizo porque es sangre digerida por las pulgas. Las pulgas ademas de succionar sangre, transmiten muchas enfermedades, es fundamental evitar que los gatos tengan pulgas!!!!!
