Dendrochronological analysis has shown that it was built in one go, from timbers felled in the winter of 1291/2. It was owned by the Cistercian monks of Beaulieu Abbey, to store their crops, and has been used by generations of farmers for centuries. Now it’s cared for by the National Trust. This is a tithe barn thought to date back to 17th century. A tithe barn was a type of barn used historically for storing rents and tithes: one tenth of a farm’s produce which was given to the church. Tithe barns were usually associated with the village church or rectory and independent farmers took their tithes there. This barn is located right next to the church. Above the door is a date stamp of 1756 but it is thought that the barn is older than this. The barn is just about to be re-roofed amongst other repairs. One side of the roof has already been stripped. The barn has Collyweston slates which is a heavy stone slate quarried near the village of Collyweston in Northamptonshire.
