Shell middens are archaeological sites made up of shells and other food remnants that act as time capsules, giving us a glimpse into what life was like thousands of years ago. These sites tell us a lot about how the communities here lived and what they ate. But they hold more than ancient trash — they hold stories of laughter, healing and kinship. Southeast Alaska Tribes are fighting hard to protect the history buried in their lands and waters — not only for themselves, but for their descendants who will carry on their legacy 1,500 years from now. Inch by inch 🧶 So much work goes into weaving before even getting started. Apart from planning and designing a piece, there’s also preparation of materials. Cedar is harvested and cured. Then it’s cooked and delicately split. Slowly but surely, warp is spun. The cedar and wool are plied together to a specific and even thickness. And finally, I will have to go through and trim off any fluffy wool pieces and scraggly bits of cedar. I’m not the fastest, it took me 2 hours to spin about 10 yards of warp, that’s after sitting and prepping everything. A 12” bag could take 65+ Yards of warp. A 3” pendant 25-30 yards. And yes I’m spinning my warp S twist so I can weave with my S twist weft, don’t come at me 🙈😂 #Weaving #northwestcoastweaving #chilkat #chilkatweaving #tlingit
