The Rollei 2.8E features an ingenious aperture coupling system. In standard operation, the aperture and shutter are adjusted independently, and the EV is displayed on the face of the shutter dial.
Aligning this small dial on the face of the aperture dial couples the aperture and shutter together at a given EV, and adjusting either dial now cycles through the aperture and shutter combinations that make up that EV.
This clever system gives the user the option to shoot fully coupled or not, unlike the permanently-coupled lenses found on Hasselblad cameras.
The aperture dial is also linked to this very trick depth-of-field scale inset in the focusing ring.
All aspects of this Rolleiflex exude a precise durability — this is truly a camera from the golden age of analog machines.
This 2.8E is fitted with the Schneider Xenotar 80mm f2.8 taking lens, a legendary optic alongside the famed Zeiss Planar. Buyers in the late 1950s could choose either lens, and Rollei users debate which is superior to this day.
Zeiss lenses had a reputation for higher contrast, whereas Schneider-fitted Rollei’s were said to have a more delicate look in black and white. What we can say is that this Xenotar resolves amazing detail while retaining a lovely depth and presence.
