BAPeople love to call this “terrible twos” but what’s actually happening is something pretty amazing (even if it seems frustrating for all of us in the moment).
It’s actually a really important stage of development. Around age two, toddlers start having bigger feelings, stronger opinions, and a growing sense of independence. They know what they want things to look like, how they expected something to happen, and when it doesn’t go that way… their emotions come out fast.
But their brains are still learning how to regulate those emotions, so something small to us can feel really big to them.
It’s not misbehavior or being a brat. It’s learning. It’s growing. And sometimes a broken banana really does feel like the end of the world when you’re two!
When moments like this happen, the best thing we can do is stay calm and help them through it. Acknowledging their feelings, staying close, and helping them problem solve (“We can still eat the banana!”) goes a long way. These little moments might seem silly, but they’re actually how toddlers learn that big feelings are okay and that they’re safe working through them.
