PAA birth that represents hope. 💚
Here at Parque das Aves, we celebrate a historic milestone for biodiversity conservation: the birth of the first Blue-eyed Ground Dove (Columbina cyanopis) chick from parents under human care. 🐣
With fewer than 20 individuals known in the wild, in Botumirim (MG), this species is classified as Critically Endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). This unprecedented birth symbolizes the power of science and collaboration in the fight against extinction. 🧬
Since 2019, our team has been working with deep dedication on the management of this species. Experts in Neonatology, Veterinary Medicine, Animal Welfare, Animal Nutrition, and Zootechnics have worked together to ensure success in every step—from habitat creation to incubation and neonatal care.
Today, alongside the newly hatched chick, six other individuals live here at the Park, forming a vital safety population for the future of the species. Every action is part of a strategic plan with reproductive management and careful integration, aiming to build a stable and genetically viable population.
This effort is part of the National Action Plan for the Conservation of Birds of the Cerrado and Pantanal, coordinated by ICMBio through CEMAVE. The work is carried out in partnership with SAVE Brasil, Chester Zoo (UK), Toledo Zoo (USA), Bronx Zoo (USA), and the Laboratory of Avian Genetics and Molecular Evolution at the University of São Paulo (USP), in addition to other public and private institutions committed to conservation. 🌍
We believe science and collaboration are the path to a safer future for endangered species. With responsibility and unity, we continue making a difference. 🌱

Posted @thetoledozoo • We can bear-ly contain our excitement! For the first time since 2012, we welcomed twin Polar bear cubs to the Toledo Zoo family! 🐻❄️🐻❄️
The parents of the twin cubs are 24-year-old female, Crystal, and 18-year-old male, Nuka.
The Polar bear Species Survival Program (SSP) issued a breeding recommendation for Crystal in hopes of mating to sustain this endangered species. We welcomed Nuka to the Toledo Zoo in March of this year to begin that process.
Crystal’s eighth and ninth cubs’ genders are unknown at this time. They are estimated to make their public exhibit debut in the spring of 2023.
In the meantime, you can watch a live feed on our YouTube channel of Crystal and the cubs. Live feed viewing is available daily from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. The camera will be off after 4 p.m., but viewers can still hear the Polar bears through the microphone.

PHWe're excited to announce TWO new additions to our big cat family!! 🐅🐆
Meet Rafferty the male Amur leopard and Rory the female Amur tiger! Both arrived at the Zoo in early summer on an Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Species Survival Plan (SSP) breeding recommendation and are now visible to guests inside their habitats at Big Cat Falls!
😺 Rafferty: He was born at Utah's Hogle Zoo on February 17, 2017. His name means "one who possesses prosperity." He previously sired offspring at Rosamond Gifford Zoo in Syracuse, New York in 2019 which is where he was before coming to Philadelphia Zoo. Amur leopards are the rarest mammal species at the Zoo and are critically endangered with less than 150 in the wild.
😺 Rory: She was born at Toledo Zoo on July 20, 2021. The public voted to choose her name, and donations to name her and her twin Alexei went to tiger conservation efforts. At four years old, she is considered fully grown but will likely fill out a bit more. She weighs almost 300 pounds. She also has the longest whiskers than any other tiger at Philly Zoo! Amur tigers are endangered with less than 500 in the wild.

SA👀 The Zoo got two new additions this past week!!! Please welcome our two new baby Ball Pythons! They may be new, but they have already slithered their way into our hearts 💛
🐍 These little scaly cuties came to us from the Toledo Zoo. Only 1 month old, these gorgeous reptiles will be in routine quarantine for 90 days before they join the ranks with the rest of our Ambassador Animals. Then, soon they will find their new home in our in-progress "Wild In Nature" indoor building for you to view them in person 🤗
