Tom Platz is known for having arguably the best leg development in bodybuilding history, and here is his opinion on squats vs leg press. I love his opinion as it comes from absolute authority AND it confirms my bias, but as a coach and as an educator, I’ve learnt that it’s ok to have biases, but it’s more important to have an open mind, and to not speak or teach in absolutes. Unfortunately there is an increase in popularity of modern day personal trainers teaching people that squats (amongst many of our favourite barbell exercises) are BAD and are inferior to machine exercises like leg presses, and usually without context. Here’s my OPINION. Squats are the king of lifts. They build muscle. They build strength. They build mental fortitude. I love doing them, and they have been the motivation for myself and so many people to train hard and achieve outstanding results. Are they the best exercise for quadriceps development? For some people they may be, and for others, machine exercises are simply better. There is no single answer because everyone has different goals as well as different skill levels, different bone lengths, different proportions and different levels of mobility. Definitive statements without context are an effective way to spread a message, but it doesn’t make that message true. Like most debates, the pendulum swings both directions and the answer lies somewhere in the middle. The squat AND the leg press are both valuable tools that can both be extremely helpful, and both with different outcomes. Neither are better or worse and can both be used together to create great results. If I was to pick a side, I’d go with team Platz (team squats) and if you disagree, that’s totally fine, you’re just a pussy…. Ok calm down, that was joke and an example of exactly what I’m talking about. But if people are allowed to claim that squats are bad and leg presses are better, I’m definitely entitled to a different opinion, and Tom Platz the quadzilla himself is most definitely entitled to give his. #squats #tomplatz

Tom Platz - "If you give up on your dreams, What do you have left? Nothing, I can't live that way." Tom Platz (born June 26, 1955), nicknamed "The Quadfather" or "Golden Eagle," is a retired American professional bodybuilder famed for his unprecedented leg development in the 1970s-80s golden era. Starting with skinny legs at age 15, he transformed through obsessive high-rep squats, powerlifting records, and training at Gold's Gym, winning Mr. Universe middleweight (1977) and turning pro. A nine-time Mr. Olympia top-10 finisher (3rd in 1981), he never claimed the title but revolutionized leg training standards still emulated today. by @mindsetsmedia speaker | Tom Platz #mindsetsmedia #mndst #motivation #motivationalquotes #tomplatz

Tom Platz was born with a lower spine condition. The plates weren’t fused properly. Every time he squatted, it aggravated. Friends told him squats would ruin his back. He believed them and avoided legs entirely. At 9 years old he saw a photo of Dave Draper and decided his life had a direction. He trained on the basement floor while his father read the Weider manual aloud. Two younger siblings counted his reps. He moved to LA with $50 in his pocket. Trained at Gold’s Gym alongside Arnold. Built a physique that stopped every room he walked into. His best Olympia placing was 3rd in 1981. Many in the sport believe to this day he should have won it outright. But the legacy isn’t the trophy he never got. It’s 500lb squatted for 23 reps. 225lb held in a squat for 10 minutes straight. Legs measuring over 76cm at their peak. A training intensity so extreme it influenced Dorian Yates, Branch Warren, and an entire generation of lifters who came after him. The man told not to squat became the gold standard for legs in the entire history of bodybuilding. 40 years later nobody has touched it. Tom Platz and the Most Extreme Squat Mindset Ever 👀💥 Tom Platz didn’t just train legs. He engineered the environment to destroy them. He used his own custom bar slightly bent on purpose so it locked onto his back and forced pure quad domination. No rolling. No shifting. No escape. Why? Because he wasn’t training for numbers. He was training for muscle. Low-bar, powerlifting squats build leverage. High-bar squats build legs that look like they don’t belong on a human body. Platz understood something most lifters still miss: Bodybuilding and powerlifting are different sports. If your goal is physique, stop chasing lifts made for strength athletes. Train the muscle. Not the ego. #TomPlatz #LegDay #BodybuildingMindset #Quadzilla #TrainForGrowth
