Definition: Tracheostomy is a surgical procedure in which an opening (stoma) is created in the anterior wall of the trachea and a tracheostomy tube is inserted to maintain a patent airway. Indications: Upper airway obstruction (tumor, trauma, edema, foreign body) Prolonged mechanical ventilation Severe head injury / coma Neuromuscular disorders causing respiratory failure To facilitate removal of secretions Laryngeal or pharyngeal surgery Types: Emergency tracheostomy Elective tracheostomy Temporary or permanent Surgical tracheostomy Percutaneous dilatational tracheostomy Procedure (Brief): Patient in supine position with neck extended Aseptic precautions maintained Incision made between 2nd and 4th tracheal rings Tracheostomy tube inserted and secured Oxygen and humidification provided Advantages: Bypasses upper airway obstruction Reduces dead space Improves ventilation Easier suctioning of secretions Better patient comfort in long-term ventilation Complications: Bleeding Infection Tube obstruction or displacement Subcutaneous emphysema Pneumothorax Tracheal stenosis (late) Nursing Care: Maintain airway patency by regular suctioning Provide humidified oxygen Perform tracheostomy care using sterile technique Monitor vital signs and oxygen saturation Ensure tube is secured properly Prevent infection #nursingreels #aiimsdelhi❤️ #norcet #dsssb #nursingstudent

A tracheostomy tube is a medical device placed through a surgically created opening (stoma) in the neck directly into the trachea (windpipe). It provides an alternate airway to help someone breathe. What it’s used for Long-term ventilation (when breathing support is needed for weeks/months) Upper airway obstruction (tumors, swelling, trauma) Poor airway protection (neurologic injury, reduced consciousness) Secretion management (can’t clear mucus effectively) Main parts Outer cannula – stays in the trachea and keeps the airway open Inner cannula – removable for cleaning (not on all tubes) Cuff (on some tubes) – inflatable balloon that seals the airway for ventilation and reduces aspiration Neck flange/plate – rests on the neck and anchors the tube Obturator – used only during insertion to guide placement Common types Cuffed vs. uncuffed – cuffed for ventilation; uncuffed allows more airflow around the tube Fenestrated – holes that help with speech when appropriate Single vs. double cannula Metal vs. plastic (plastic is most common today) Daily care basics Keep the stoma clean and dry Suction as needed to clear secretions Humidification to prevent thick mucus Regular inner cannula cleaning/replacement Check cuff pressure if present Possible complications Infection or skin breakdown Bleeding Tube blockage (thick secretions) Accidental decannulation Tracheal injury with long-term use #NurseLife #MedicalNursing #NursesOfInstagram #HealthcareHeroes #NursingEducation

Tracheostomy care is a critical nursing responsibility aimed at maintaining airway patency, preventing infection, and promoting optimal respiratory function in patients with a tracheostomy tube. A tracheostomy is a surgically created opening in the anterior neck that provides direct access to the trachea, commonly indicated for airway obstruction, prolonged mechanical ventilation, or impaired airway protection. Proper care begins with routine assessment of the stoma site and surrounding skin for redness, swelling, discharge, or signs of infection. Maintaining a clean and dry site reduces the risk of local complications. Sterile or aseptic technique should be used during dressing changes and inner cannula cleaning to minimize microbial contamination. Airway patency must be ensured through regular suctioning when secretions are present. Suctioning should be performed only when clinically indicated (e.g., audible secretions, respiratory distress, decreased oxygen saturation) to prevent mucosal trauma. Humidification is equally important, as the tracheostomy bypasses natural airway humidification, increasing the risk of thick secretions and mucus plugs. Securing the tracheostomy tube with properly fitted ties or holders prevents accidental decannulation, while allowing space for one finger between the tie and neck to avoid pressure injury. Emergency equipment including a spare tube of the same size and one smaller size, suction device, and oxygen should always be available at the bedside. Patient education is also vital, Teaching coughing techniques, stoma hygiene, communication strategies, and early signs of complications empowers patients and caregivers to participate actively in care. #TracheostomyCare #AirwayManagement#NursingCare #CriticalCareNursing #RespiratoryCare #PatientSafety #ClinicalSkills #NursingEducation #HealthcareProfessionals fellownurses.com

tracheostomy is a procedure in which a small opening is made in the front of the neck to insert a tube into the trachea (windpipe). First, the patient is positioned properly and the neck area is cleaned and sterilized. Local or general anesthesia is given. A small incision is made in the skin and underlying tissues, and the trachea is exposed. An opening is created between the tracheal rings, and the tracheostomy tube is gently inserted into the airway. The tube is then secured with ties or sutures and connected to oxygen or a ventilator if needed. This helps maintain a clear airway and allows the patient to breathe easily. #tracheostomy #airwaymanagement #otlife #medicalreels lifesavingprocedure viral
