PUA speeding truck rammed into vehicles waiting at a traffic signal near the Katraj–Navale Bridge area of Pune early Friday morning, killing a motorcyclist on the spot and damaging several cars, police said.
The accident occurred around 6:30 am at the Navale Bridge junction, where vehicles had stopped at a red signal. According to preliminary reports, a truck descending from the slope near the Katraj tunnel lost control and struck a line of vehicles waiting at the signal.
The truck first hit a motorcycle with great force, leaving the rider critically injured. The victim succumbed to injuries at the scene itself. The truck then collided with several cars ahead, damaging at least five four-wheelers in the chain collision.
The impact left debris scattered across the road, triggering panic among motorists and passers-by in the area.
Following the accident, traffic at the busy junction came to a standstill for some time as vehicles and debris blocked the road. A crowd of onlookers gathered at the site, further slowing movement in the area.
Personnel from the Sinhagad Road Police Station and traffic police rushed to the spot soon after receiving information about the crash. With the help of local residents, police cleared the damaged vehicles from the road and gradually restored traffic flow.
The body of the deceased motorcyclist was sent to Sassoon General Hospital for further procedures. Police have initiated the process of registering a case against the truck driver.
The Katraj–Navale Bridge stretch has long been considered an accident-prone zone due to its steep slope, speeding vehicles and heavy traffic movement. Local residents have repeatedly raised concerns about frequent accidents in the area, despite various safety measures introduced by authorities.
Friday’s incident has once again highlighted the safety risks on the busy highway corridor.
