1. Transitive Verb
A transitive verb needs a direct object to complete its meaning.
It answers the question “what?” or “whom?”
Examples:
She reads a book. (reads what? → a book)
They built a house. (built what? → a house)
He loves his parents. (loves whom? → his parents)
👉 Without the object, the sentence feels incomplete:
She reads ❌ (reads what?)
2. Intransitive Verb
An intransitive verb does not need an object. The sentence is complete by itself.
Examples:
The baby cried.
Birds fly.
He slept.
👉 You cannot ask “what?” or “whom?” after these verbs in a meaningful way.

Some verbs can be both transitive and intransitive, depending on usage:
