If your tree isn’t thriving, check to see if it has “suckers” coming out of the root stock. This tree was planted in ground a few years ago, but has always been on the struggle bus for our client. In an attempt to rehabilitate it, we dug it up and potted it in premium citrus soil. Also, we noticed this particular lime tree had four thick sucker branches coming out of the rootstock. For those new rootstock, most commercial trees are grafted onto a robust rootstock. Rootstock typically refers the bottom trunk portion with establish roots that serve as a jumpstart base for a grafted variety. Rootstocks are typically more disease resistant and are vigorous growers, however the fruit is not as desirable hence grafting on a tasty variety. Every tree has a fixed amount of energy it can produce, so if there are undesirable branches, it is consuming energy that would otherwise go to flower/fruiting and branches that you do want to keep. So, here’s your sign to go check your tree at the graft union, and cut any branches that are growing from BELOW or AT the graft union. If you’re new around here, welcome! Stump Grinding v. Stump Removal 🤔⁣ ⁣ I’m sure many of you have gone through the experience of removing a tree at some point in your life but there is a MAJOR difference to be aware of when talking to the arborist or tree trimming company.⁣ ⁣ Stump GRINDING is when the entire stump is ground down to the base of the soil, BUT the underlying rootball and roots are not removed. It looks clean and flat, but could have an extensive root system underneath the soil 😟

Stump REMOVAL is when the entire rootball is excavated and removed. I thought for a long time about whether I should post this video or not. In the end, it’s a good example of how one small wrong decision in a tree can end everything. 🚫🌳 In the same tree, I had already removed six similar crown sections in exactly the same way – without any issues at all. 🪵 After watching this clip over and over again, one thing became clear: I was incredibly lucky. Luckily, I was working with a friction hitch that starts to slip once a certain amount of force is applied. ➡️ the system extended ➡️ much less load on my body On top of that, the tip of the limb was able to rest on the ground, which helped dissipate a large amount of the weight. And by the way – the Stileo by @couranttreecare (steel-core lanyard) is extremely strong 👌😂 Conclusion: Always work redundant. Without my main system, I would have been completely unsecured after cutting the short lanyard. 🚫 Take care up there. 🌳🪢 —————————————————————————————— Ich habe lange überlegt, ob ich dieses Video hochladen soll. Am Ende ist es aber ein gutes Beispiel dafür, wie eine kleine Fehlentscheidung im Baum alles beenden kann. 🚫🌳 Im selben Baum habe ich zuvor sechs vergleichbare Kronenteile auf genau die gleiche Art entfernt – komplett ohne Probleme. 🪵 Dieses Video habe ich mir danach immer wieder angeschaut und gemerkt: Ich hatte einfach verdammt viel Glück. Zum Glück habe ich mit einem Klemmknoten gearbeitet, der ab einer gewissen Kraft auf dem Seil rutscht. ➡️ Die Sicherung hat sich verlängert ➡️ deutlich weniger Last auf meinem Körper Zusätzlich konnte die Astspitze auf dem Boden aufliegen und so einen Großteil des Gewichts ableiten. Und ansonsten ist die Stileo von @couranttreecare (Stahlkern-Halteseil) extrem stabil 👌😂 Fazit: Immer redundant arbeiten. Ohne mein Hauptsystem wäre ich nach dem Durchtrennen der Kurzsicherung ungesichert gewesen.🚫 Passt auf euch auf. 🌳🪢 #arborist #baumpflege #treeclimbing #arboristlife #fail
