The rain that built a world. 🌧️🦖🌋 About 232 million years ago, during the Triassic Period, the sky opened up and didn't close for nearly two million years. This phenomenon is known to scientists as the Carnian Pluvial Event. The Volcanic Trigger: The rain wasn't an accident. Massive volcanic eruptions in the Wrangellia terrane released a staggering amount of greenhouse gases. This caused global temperatures to soar, which increased evaporation from the oceans, leading to a humid, soggy planet that was stuck in a cycle of constant rainfall. The Rise of the Giants: Before this "Great Deluge," dinosaurs were just a minor group of animals. But the 2-million-year rain changed the vegetation of the planet, killing off older species and allowing dinosaurs to diversify and dominate. We literally owe the age of the dinosaurs to a massive, million-year climate shift. It’s a reminder that Earth's climate is a powerful, interconnected system and once it starts raining, it might not stop for a very, very long time. ✨ How would your life change if it rained every single day for the next month? 👇 #universia #geology #dinosaurs #triassic #earthscience #sciencefacts #prehistoric #evolution #climatehistory #natureisamazing #paleontology #volcano

Behold the Triassic: The beginning of the Age of Reptiles! As I previously eluded to, the Triassic was this massive transition from Permian ecosystems dominated by stem-mammals to those primarily composed of archosaurs. However, there were *some* holdovers…Obviously the ancestors of modern mammals persisted into the Triassic. But the herbivorous hippo-pig dicynodonts also did pretty well during the Triassic, with Lystrosaurus surviving the extinction to become one of the most abundant animals on earth for a few million years. One of the last dicynodonts, Lisowicia was a giant, comparable in size to modern elephants (note though this group went extinct at the end of the period, this seems to have been slightly before the mass extinction.) The land was ruled by reptiles, mostly archosaurs. These were crocodile-relatives, from the swift-footed shuvosaurs to the giant rauisuchids, the top predators of their day. But a new challenger first appeared during the Middle Triassic…the dinosaurs. Though the oldest *definitive* dinosaurs first appeared about 231 mya, fragments of creatures that *might* be dinosaurs like Nayasasaurus are possibly as old as 243 mya. And when they first evolved, they were NOT the kings of their kingdoms. Most were small, generalized omnivores that had to avoid predation by the larger crocodile-relatives. But they became diverse during he Triassic, with the first theropod (meat-eaters), sauropod (long-necks), and ornithischian (duck bills, horned, and armored) dinosaurs evolving during this time. Just as it became with a boom, so did it end with one. The Triassic-Jurassic mass extinction wiped out a ton of life, including the dicynodonts and many of the crocodile-relatives. This left the dinosaurs to inherit the earth as its new rulers. . . . . . #triassic #dinosaurs #dicynodont #lystrosaurus #rauisuchian #postosuchus #coelophysis #sauropod #theropod #ornithischia #saurischia #paleontology #paleontologymemes #paleomemes #dinosaurmemes #biologymemes #massextinction

The marine reptile that used its hammer-shaped jaw like a prehistoric lawnmower. 🌊🌿 Atopodentatus was a unique swimmer that spent its days grazing on underwater plants along the ocean floor. It’s a rare example of a marine reptile that skipped the hunting and went straight for the greens. If you saw this strange face looking back at you through a glass-bottom boat, would you find it cool or just a little bit creepy? 👇 #atopodentatus #prehistoric #marinelife #triassic #paleontology #nature #history #oceancreatures #wildlife #ancientanimals

Shonisaurus was one of the largest marine reptiles to ever live. It swam the oceans during the Late Triassic, around 215–205 million years ago, long before dinosaurs ruled the land. Shonisaurus could reach an estimated 15–21 meters (50–69 feet) in length, rivaling modern blue whales in sheer size. Despite its enormous body, it had relatively small teeth, suggesting it mainly fed on soft prey such as squid rather than large animals. Fossils found in Nevada show that Shonisaurus lived in open oceans and likely relied on efficient, energy-saving swimming to survive, proving that giant body sizes evolved in marine reptiles far earlier than most people realize. Imagine a storm that doesn't stop for a week. Now imagine it raining for 2 million years. 🌧️🤯 232 million years ago, the Earth was a dry, red wasteland. But then, massive volcanic eruptions (the Wrangellia Province) spiked global carbon levels, turning the planet into a humid hothouse. This is known as the Carnian Pluvial Event. The skies opened up, turning the supercontinent of Pangea into a lush tropical jungle. This explosion of plant life gave a small, minor group of reptiles the fuel they needed to grow into giants. When the clouds finally cleared... the Age of Dinosaurs had begun. 🦖🌿 Did you know about this "Great Rain"? Every era of prehistory had a king… a predator so deadly that even time whispers its name. In the Triassic, Herrerasaurus hunted with savage precision, ruling a world still crawling out of chaos. In the Jurassic, Allosaurus dominated the forests with speed, strategy, and unstoppable aggression. And in the Cretaceous, the throne belonged to monsters like Tyrannosaurus Rex and Spinosaurus, creatures so powerful they redefined what a predator could be. These weren’t just dinosaurs they were evolution’s most perfect weapons. #dinosaur #dinosaurs #prehistoric #paleontology #trex #jurassicpark #jurassicworld #dinosaursofinstagram #velociraptor #spinosaurus #triceratops #dinosaurart #paleoart #extinct #extinctanimals #didyouknowfacts #didyouknow #foryoupage #prehistoricearth #prehistoriclife #triassic #cretaceousperiod #prehistoricfacts
