DISixty eight million years ago in the Arctic, a Nanuqsaurus was poised to strike, its eyes locked on a Troodon. It launched a surprise attack, driving the smaller hunter out across a barren plain and then onto a frozen lake. The Troodon’s light body skimmed across the ice—but the heavier Nanuqsaurus crashed through, trapped in freezing water. Intelligence, not strength, saved the little predator’s life.
That same cleverness shaped its everyday survival. One Troodon pried a fat insect from a tree stump, carried it to a stream, and tossed it into the water. Minutes later, a small fish came to investigate—and the Troodon snatched it, turning one bug into a much bigger meal. It cached food too, burying nuts before winter, then dug them back up after snowstorms when other dinosaurs starved.
Even in an age ruled by giants, Troodon survived with brains over brawn—until the day it returned to its nest to find its eggs shattered, and a new mystery waiting in the snow.
