GEContext : In 1936, Leon Trotsky did not confront Joseph Stalin in person. He did something more dangerous. From exile, Trotsky published The Revolution Betrayed, a direct attack on Stalin’s rule. He argued that the Soviet Union had abandoned real socialism and become a bureaucratic dictatorship. Stalin, in Trotsky’s view, was not a Marxist visionary but a mediocre administrator who seized power through fear, loyalty networks, and repression. Trotsky rejected “socialism in one country,” calling it a cover for personal rule and nationalist retreat. He warned that Stalinism was strangling the revolution from within while pretending to defend it. Stalin’s response was not debate but action. In the same year, the Great Purge began, eliminating rivals and rewriting history. Trotsky’s words made him a marked man. Power, not argument, decided the outcome.
