LII didn’t start running until I was 50.
People are always surprised when they hear that. I think they assume I’ve always been a runner.
I haven’t. Before that, I was much closer to a couch potato than anything athletic.
When it comes up, I tend to hear things like:
“I could never do that.”
“Isn’t that hard on your knees?”
“You must have always been athletic.”
(My knees are just fine!)
When I started, running was just hard. I was slow. Quickly out of breath and it didn’t feel natural at all.
Do you know what helped? I kept showing up. AND I called myself a runner.
Not because I was fast or good at it, but because I had the shoes on, I was on the path, and I was moving forward. That part mattered more than anything else.
What surprised me most is how much I ended up loving it.
So no, I wasn’t always a runner. Not even close.
I’m just someone who started later.
Turns out that works too.
