THTo everyone who’s reached out checking on me — I’m safe.
Yes, we were advised to shelter in place following a significant military operation here in Mexico. And while the news cycle will move on quickly, I want to offer some real context.
Cartels don’t just appear out of thin air. They are the product of centuries of colonization, systemic poverty, and political corruption. The people most harmed are never cartel leaders or tourists — it’s always Indigenous communities, farmers, and everyday working families.
The U.S. media narratives erase these structural realities and dehumanize millions of Mexicans simply trying to live their lives. And then there’s the fear mongering — which has its own victims. Every time headlines explode, tourism suffers. And tourism is a lifeline for the most vulnerable people here.
The geographic reality: Mexico is a BIG country. What happened was concentrated in Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta. Here in Quintana Roo — Tulum, Cancún, the Riviera Maya — things are calm and returning to normal.
I still feel safer here as a Black woman than I do in many parts of the United States. That is my lived truth.

✔️ Stay present and mindful
✔️ Know your tourism dollars support real families
