Sunday Species Spotlight: Meet the Ryukyu black-breasted leaf turtle! The Ryukyu black-breasted leaf turtle is nature’s tiny mountaineer, thriving in the steep, high-elevation forests of Japan’s Ryukyu Islands. With really big claws and long legs, it prefers life off the beaten path. Big thanks to the @okinawakamecentre for keeping these climbers safe! Here at the Turtle Conservancy, we have been dedicated to the conservation of Ryukyu black-breasted leaf turtles for over 10 years. We maintain a group of these turtles at our center and have successfully produced many offspring. Our goal is to support Japanese researchers in studying this species and protecting their habitat into the future! #turtle #turtleconservancy #wildlife #education #reptiles #animals #turtlelove

There is both intrinsic and instrumental value to turtles. It is both moral and pragmatic to appreciate and protect this incredibly unique group of animals. The Testudines and their ancestors are a group older than the dinosaurs. From the earliest stem turtles, to their ~488 modern taxa, and the thousands of intermediates come and gone, the turtles have remained both a shocking conglomeration of unique adaptations and very unchanged. They’ve mastered land and sea, oxygen-rich and anoxic environments, life in a shell, and how to persist. Their way of life has captivated us, evidenced by their prominent place in our collective human culture. They are a unique group, deserved of a seat at the table of existence, simply in that they exist and inspire. If the former argument is not enough, which I believe to be the case for many people, probably for good reason in many cases, it is useful to note that when evolutionary biology is wedded with the incentive to conserve, a good deal of directly “selfish” reasons to promote turtle conservation - and conservation broadly - arise. To start, the turtles are more similar to us as humans than you might think. We generally live to comparable ages and reach maturity around the same time. Considering these similarities in life history with the fact that many solutions in human medicine simply require looking to nature, it stands to reason the turtles can teach us a lot about ourselves, directly in some cases, indirectly in others. By deciphering the genetic code of the turtles, and pontificating on how natural selection has shaped it, breakthroughs in cancer, diabetes, aging, reperfusion injury, epigenetics, genomic landscape, human evolution, etc. research lie within reach. By looking under the turtle’s hood, we can save numerous lives, and enrich many others. On this #WorldTurtleDay please take a moment to reflect on what turtles mean to you, and if you’re inclined, take a step to protect this most threatened group of vertebrates. Do it for them, yourself, your family, or your friends. We all have a stake in life because we’re living, and can learn from each other. 📸 - Hatchling Narrow-bridged Musk Turtles @bfreebz

It takes a village to raise 800 turtles! 🥗🥬 The turtles and tortoises residing at our Turtle Survival Center enjoy feasting on seasonal “Fall salads”. Our tortoises munch on yellow squash, zucchini, pumpkin, and fig on a bed of lettuce. Box turtles require more protein in their diets than tortoises, so they receive the same delicious medley mixed with shrimp, clams, and sardines. The Center has over 800 turtles divided among several complexes, each housing different turtle species. Pictured are 341 turtles from our Tortoise Barn complex (33), Assurance Colony Expansion (ACE) complex (242), and Greenhouse complex (66). As it starts to get colder, the turtles from these complexes will be fed twice a week. Other turtles at our center that live predominantly in outdoor enclosures get fed regularly except for in Winter, when they’ll be in brumation, which is like hibernating for reptiles. In addition to their main diet, these turtles will forage for insects, fruits, and other things. To learn more about the Turtle Survival Center and the turtle species that we care for, head over to our website, linked in the bio, and follow us for more behind-the-scenes Chelonian Keeper activities! A year ago, I volunteered with LAST (Latin American Sea Turtles) in Pacuare, Costa Rica, and it was one of the best and most ethical conservation experiences I’ve ever had. We didn’t just take photos — we wore gloves, collected data, measured turtles, and worked with controlled artificial hatcheries to safely relocate and protect eggs. Once the hatchlings emerged, we guided them to the ocean naturally — no touristy hand releases, just real conservation. Yes, I took videos and photos — but always with care and purpose. You can document and contribute in a meaningful way. I also met some of the most inspiring, like-minded people who genuinely care about our planet — and I’m so grateful for those connections. I highly recommend this project, especially for anyone interested in marine conservation. To find ethical ones: • Look for NGOs or science-based programs (not tour companies) • Check if they work with locals and collect data • Be wary of projects offering animal contact or daily hatchling releases These programs often charge a fee (for food, housing, etc.), but it’s usually fair — and the longer you stay, the less you pay. Sometimes, you can even join for free as an intern or student researcher. As I study marine biology and keep exploring the world, I’ll keep supporting and recommending ethical conservation efforts — and one day, I hope to lead them myself. . . . . . #ocean #conservation #ecotravel #wildlife #marinebiology #turtle #turtleconservation #costarica

The Professor is one massive Galapagos Tortoise and he sure loves his carrots😳 I love feeding him but I didn’t want him to mistake my fingers for some carrots😅 He’s originally from the Galapagos Island Tortoise and is 108 years old but some of them live over 200 years old🙌 They are incredibly strong and very smart🤩 Galapagos Island Tortoises are known to be the biggest type of tortoise and this guys huge but he doesn’t compare to some of the biggest👀 He is an absolute sweetheart and I always have such a blast feeding and interacting with him over at Sam’s Giant Tortoise Farm🙌

She couldn’t ask for help — but they heard her anyway 💚🐢 Sometimes, nature needs a hand 🐢🙏 🎥 : stevie_versus_the_world Tried to help a struggling turtle today. Moved it to safety, gave it shade, cheered it on. People: You held it wrong. You stressed it out. You’re the worst. Moral of the story? Even when you do right with limited knowledge, the world will happily show you where you went wrong. 😂 🤦🏻‍♂️ But hey—still better than doing nothing. 🐢✌️ #seaturtle #turtle #🐢 #scubadiving #dive #diver #redsea #turtlelove #turtles #redseadiving #ocean #sea #oceanlife
