🧠 Sea Turtle Fact: Fibropapillomatosis (FP) This green sea turtle is battling a disease called fibropapillomatosis — a condition caused by a herpesvirus (Chelonid herpesvirus 5 (ChHV5)) that leads to external and internal tumors.  While the virus itself is widespread, not all turtles develop tumors. Scientists believe that water pollution (especially from pesticides and fertilizers used in agriculture) and other human-driven stressors may weaken turtles’ immune systems and trigger the disease. The good news? Some turtles recover naturally, and in some places, sick individuals are rescued and undergo tumor-removal surgery. But prevention starts with us — by protecting marine ecosystems and reducing water pollution by our agriculture, we can help turn the tide. 📹 @marathonturtlehospital (patient Tupper) #SeaTurtleBiologist #SeaTurtles #SeaTurtleFact #GreenTurtle #Fibropapillomatosis #FP #MarineConservation #OceanHealth #SeaTurtleBiologist #WildlifeDisease #SaveTheTurtle

A baby turtle, often called a hatchling, is very small and fragile. After hatching from its egg, it instinctively crawls toward the water or safe habitat. Baby turtles rely on their natural instincts for survival and start swimming or walking as soon as they reach the environment they belong to. They grow slowly and need warm, clean surroundings, proper food, and protection from predators. #turtle🐢 #turtle #nature #wildlife #animal #cute #amazing #great #nice #turtles #turtleofinstagram #turtlelove #turtlelover

"Turtle teamwork! Did you know that turtles often hibernate in groups? This social strategy is called "communal brumation." By huddling together, turtles share body heat, conserve energy, and protect themselves from predators. Group hibernation also helps regulate humidity and maintain a stable microclimate, ensuring the turtles' survival during harsh winter conditions. 子ガメ洗いは大切な仕事です 飼育下の赤ちゃんウミガメは成長が早いため、体をお掃除しないと皮膚病に罹りやすくなってしまいます。 このように定期的に掃除することで健やかに成長してくれます。 Baby sea turtles in captivity grow quickly, so if their bodies are not cleaned, they makes them more prone to skin diseases. By giving them routine cleanings like this, we help ensure their healthy growth. #ウミガメ公園 #紀宝町 #道の駅#南紀#熊野#爬虫類#保護#アオウミガメ#日常#水族館 #seaturtle #greenseaturtle #turtle #rescue #cheloniamydas

This morning I picked up this sub adult loggerhead from some boaters who reported her floating She was COVERED in epibiota, which is the barnacles, shrimp and organisms you see all over her skin and carapace (shell) This happens when a sea turtle is sick and floating at the surface for extended amounts of time. Some epibiota growth is normal but this amount of growth is an anomaly. Barnacles can attach to her slow moving body and over time more and more larval organisms attach and begin to feed off of her and the other organisms calling her home. She was taken to a sea turtle rehab facility for care and hopefully will be successfully rehabilitated and returned home to the wild soon All sea turtle work is FWC permitted. If you encounter an injured or sick sea turtle in the state of Florida please call 888-404-FWCC to talk to a biologist for guidance. #seaturtles #floridawildlife #seaturtleconservation

Fibropapillomatosis—a disease affecting sea turtles. She swam right past me… strong, calm, and still fighting. 💚🐢 But look closely at her mouth. This beautiful female Green sea turtle is living with Fibropapillomatosis, a disease affecting sea turtles around the world, including here in Hawaiʻi. Despite the tumors, many turtles keep swimming, feeding, and surviving. A few things to know about this disease: • 🦠 Fibropapillomatosis causes tumors that grow on soft tissue like the eyes, flippers, neck, and mouth. • 🌊 It’s linked to a herpesvirus that spreads among turtles in the ocean. • 🍽 Tumors around the mouth can make it harder for turtles to eat. • 👁 When tumors grow near the eyes, they can block vision and make survival difficult. • 🐢 Some turtles recover naturally, while others need help from wildlife rehabilitation programs. • 🌱 Scientists believe pollution, runoff, and environmental stress may make the disease worse. Yet she kept swimming… graceful as ever. The ocean is beautiful, but it also tells stories like this one. 💙 #seaturtle #fibropapillomatosis #oceanconservation #marinewildlife #wildlifeencounter

Hatchlings or baby sea turtles hatch after six weeks to two months of time. After the baby sea turtles have hatched, they are completely independent and do not require parental supervision. The baby sea turtles spend a long time drifting along the ocean currents. During this period, they feed on tiny organisms found on floating algae. This stage in a sea turtle’s life varies, depending on the species and availability of food. After some time, young sea turtles go near the seashore and settle there till they reach the adult stage. In this stage, the young sea turtles are always mobile and migrating from one ocean to the other. This stage in a sea turtle’s life might last as long as a decade.
