This place had been on my must-see list for a while, and we finally went last May: Ashintully Gardens and Ruins in Tyringham, MA. (In the Berkshires, just over 2 hrs from Boston) The mansion — built in the 1910s on a 1,000-acre estate and dubbed The Marble Palace — was destroyed by a fire in 1952, leaving only foundations and tall Doric columns. It’s quite a scene as you emerge from the woods and see the enormous columns against the backdrop of the Berkshire hills. Particularly stunning in early evening! (“Ashintully” is Gaelic for “on the brow of the hill”.) The property is owned and preserved by the Trustees, an incredible organization in Massachusetts whose mission is to “preserve exceptional places”. They have so many beautiful and fascinating properties and this one did not disappoint. The history of this property is interesting, if you want to research it further. A famous composer, presidential ties, and a possible curse from the Egyptian King Amenhotep III (grandfather of King Tutankhamen)! Add it to your list of “must sees” when in the area! #trustees #ashintully #getthekidsoutside #berkshires familyadventure

The timbers lean at angles that shouldn't work. The upper floors jut out like they're mocking gravity itself. The roof slumps, the floors slope, and every beam looks like it made a promise centuries ago that it's still somehow keeping. This is Little Moreton Hall in Cheshire, England. And it has been defying logic for nearly 600 years. Construction started around 1450 when Richard de Moreton decided his family needed a house that screamed status. The Moretons weren't royalty. They weren't power players. But they had land, ambition, and something to prove. In the wake of the Black Death and the Hundred Years' War, England was reshaping itself. Families like the Moretons saw their chance. So they built. And then they kept building. Each generation added more. A long gallery in the 1500s that looks ready to tip over. Carved woodwork. Stained glass. A moat. Layer upon layer of ambition and adaptation, all stacked under one increasingly crooked roofline. It survived religious upheaval. Civil war. Centuries of English rain that should have rotted it to nothing. Today, it stands as one of the finest examples of Tudor domestic architecture in Britain. Not because it's perfect. Because it's gloriously, defiantly imperfect. Human-sized. Real. Sometimes the best stories aren't about what was built to last. They're about what refused to fall.

From medieval roots to manor house marvel… 🏰✨ The story of the Sitwells and Renishaw Hall began in the 13th century (yes, that far back 👀), when the Sitwell family first put down roots in Eckington. Fast forward to the late 1500s, and Robert Sytwell gets things rolling by creating the estate—no pressure, just starting a legacy that would last centuries. By the 1620s, George Sitwell builds the original H-shaped hall, powered by iron, ambition… and probably a lot of very loud hammering 🔨 For generations, the Sitwells lived the classic country life: collecting books and paintings, managing estates and marrying heiresses. Then enters Sitwell Sitwell (yes, that’s really his name 😄), who in 1793 inherits a seriously large fortune and decides Renishaw needs a glow-up. Cue grand extensions, a Gothic temple, and a whole lot of architectural flair. Sadly, his story was as brief as it was brilliant—his sudden death at 41 brought this golden era to an abrupt pause. But every great house has its highs and lows… and Renishaw’s story was far from over, this was just the start……. To learn more about Renishaw and the history of the Sitwell family, visit the website to book in for a guided tour of the Hall and really step back in time with our amazing tour guides. Thought for the day 💭💭 Renishaw Hall is proof that history isn’t just in books… it’s right on our doorstep ✨ 📸 @clivenichols 💐 #Heritage #BritishHistory #HistoricHomes #DidYouKnow #throwbackhistory

Swinton Estate is one of those places that looks effortlessly grand from above, but there is a lot of history sat in that landscape. The estate dates back to the late 1600s, with the wider landholding later passing into the ownership of the Cunliffe-Lister family in the 1880s. At the heart of it is Swinton Park, set within 200 acres of parkland and gardens, with the wider estate stretching to around 20,000 acres on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales near Masham. The parkland itself was laid out in the 1760s, with lakes, deer park and the kind of landscape that was clearly designed to impress. From the air, that is what really comes through - not just the house, but the scale of the estate around it. It is polished, historic and properly Yorkshire, with centuries of planning and ambition written into the ground. #NorthernPerspectives #SwintonEstate #Masham

Deep in the Essex countryside, near Ongar, stands St Andrew’s, Greensted. This isn’t just another stone church. Its walls are made of 51 massive oak planks, split in half and set upright—a Saxon “stave” technique that has defied gravity, rot, and war for nearly 1,000 years. It is officially the oldest wooden church in the world and the oldest timber building in Europe. The Martyr’s Rest: In 1013, the body of St Edmund (England’s original Patron Saint before St. George) is said to have rested here overnight on its way to Bury St Edmunds. 👑 I’m uncovering five extraordinary churches that have stood for nearly a millennium, surviving everything from the Black Death to the Reformation.
